Maybe one day I can be this enthusiastic about my diabetes. I have had it for 28+ years and have never been in great control. I never remember not being diabetic... It's not something I hate, but I don't enjoy it, either. Half the time I? don't pay any attention to it.

You are so right! I was Diagnosed with type 2 in January of this year.Yeah it sucked and it hit me pretty hard. BUT being that its force a change in my life, that I always wanted and told myself i would do, Life is now worth living having to be more active and losing weight in a healthy fun way has opened my eyes to so many things.From seeing that I live in a beautiful neighborhood and city made me realize you don't need a gym or equipment to get? healthy. I agree with basically everything you said Bill. Being around other diabetics would be one thing they could all use, showing that we do our own thing and control it.? I think he was drinking regular pop cause he had seizures before but I usually do one regular drink mid way through my drinking to keep my blood sugars stable but everyone does it different.

In Australia over the last few years they have implemented healthy eating in schools. Cafeterias don't have pillows, chips, only limited icy poles etc and minimal greasy fried foods. The have main meals available eg stir fry, casseroles, salads, sandwiches etc. It's a great initiative and? the teach the kids about most, sometimes and rarely foods at all stages of education. Hopefully we will see some change in the next generation ! :)

Im so thankful that I live here in Iceland, because the system here pays 95% of my infusion sets. and 100%? of my insulin and blood glucose meter and strips. and they payed for my 10.000$ insulin pump. You might think that I had to pay especially for insurance, but no our system gives everyone? insurance like your neighbor Canada ;)

After seeing the show last night, I can COMPLETELY relate, mostly to Matt. I am a 20 year old college student that? has struggled with issues of being social especially in a drinking environment with type 1 diabetes. In response to his motif question, I feel that the two go hand in hand. In order for my life to be better, my disease MUST be better. If I drink too much and my blood sugar skyrockets, I feel awful both physically and emotionally for the choices I made. Maybe it's just me?

As I've said in other places online, ultimately, Paula Deen's health is HER business--the law protects it (HIPAA). However, since she has chosen to make it public, I have prayed that she use her platform wisely. There are many who listen to her, many who follow her and love her and she can make a HUGE impact in this nation for? diabetes awareness, education and advocacy. I think she's made some poor choices to this point, but it's NOT too late for her to help us who live in Diabetesville.

But I hope that my coming out would not appear so opportunistic and would come with a message of wanting to tackle this challenge and to help others - first and foremost. I would? hope that any sharing of profits I would make would be a primary message, and not what seems to be a secondary afterthought. With three years to process this, I would hope that my message would be clearer when I made it.

Her health announcement makes me wonder if? all her cookbooks & tons of other products aren't selling so well, thus the new announcement about her health? I wouldn't doubt that we see her cooking diabetic meals, publishing diabetic cookbooks, maybe a whole line of diabetic premade foods on a store shelves soon! It kinda makes me mad that Paula is profiting? from this and making no apparent changes in her cooking style. I'm really hoping that she will make a consertive effort to change the way she cooks (at least for the public) and get healthy. She could use her fame in a better way than she is, I'm just hoping she'll realize that and get on the ball to help other people out there that might be going through the same thing as her.

Heya great video, I get the diabetes 'hibernation' too. Waaay less active, and eat quite unhealthily (more stodge) compared to summer (loads of in season salads). My sugars were running really high the week after Christmas! think it was due to putting on weight and my ratios going down whilst at the same time starting on the pump again after a 6 month break. Slowly feeling better now and yes - cutting amount of carbs I eat really helps too :-) Best wishes? from the UK

You know that is a great idea. I did a video for a mental health website awhile back that talked about Diabetes and Depression. I know what you mean, it does exist. I fell over laughing looking at some of these situations. I have an Animas pump, which thank GOD it came with a little clip so I can clip it on my clothes or hook it on a necklace. Makes doing things with my pump a lot easier. The first couple? months I had my pump, I went through every one of these situations (and was pregnant on top of it all too) But I got used to it, and hey, I can do this. :-)

When I was? first told I am a type 1 they never even said theres going to be a cure because the hospital I stayed at because they didn't really have much hope for and and nor do I since theres so much hear say about the "cure" imo I wish there was a cure but at the same time I am not going to get my hopes up about something I don't believe is really going to happen. Oh man! I remember when I was diagnosed 24 years ago, hearing the "diabetes cure" and "give us money and we'll cure you!" I think that was what brought about a large part of my apathy for my diabetes for such a long time. I just didn't care anymore, until recently. My kids (age 3 and 7) have been my "cure" for my apathy regarding my type 1? diabetes management. So if anyone says there is a cure out there, say "Sure! its called me, and those that keep me motivated to take care of my diabetes."

Haha. I got told the same thing with type 1. A cure in 5 years...it's been 8 years lol. I always do hope for a cure but as time goes on and I mature I just hope that I can get the best possible BGLs and hba1c s that I can. Because in the end, as long as my management is great then I'm healthy and not any different to anybody else? All these islet transplants etc I don't think are for me.I'd rather some kind of mechanical mechanism that controls BGLs and pump technology? seems to be the way to go!

@LTillz & @Mr96tears, me too! I think this is a common problem. my solution is similar, take a normal "per-slice" bolus a few mins before I start eating the pizza? (I do 3 units per slice, which for me works), then maybe an hour or a little bit more later I take another one-slice top up bolus. That seems to work. Pizza has a lot of different complexity in sugar/fat/protein mix (sauce, bread, cheese, meat) which may be best balanced with multi-bolus. And, of course check blood sugars!

I totally agree that pizza is the toughest. My old dietician told me that there have been studies specifically focusing on this issue and they discovered that it's the fat in the pizza that makes everything so? difficult. She recommended doing a combo bolus (I use an Animas pump) so instead of taking all my insulin at once i take a certain percentage right away and then over the course of 4 hours after i eat I recieve the remaining insulin with my basal. Just my experience!

The toughest thing to calculate is the amount of carbs in pizza from many different places. Pizza is definitely one of my favorite foods, so I enjoy a slice or? three every now and then. It's a guessing game on how much carbs are in the dough...especially if you are getting deep dish or just thin crust. Sometimes I'll take too much insulin and be low after eating pizza...or be way too high after the pizza. It's always a gamble with pizza.

Juice isn't a sin. Basically in this video I am saying... if you drink water,? you do no insulin, so your BG numbers are very predictable. If you drink juice you have to bolus for insulin... and no matter what you do, that insulin will not be a perfect as a natural delivery. As a person with Diabetes you can eat and drink anything, but do you really want too? I use juice for lows like you. I don't drink it on a regular basis.

Great Vid! Remember, insulin is not a harmless thing. This hormone also signals to your body to STORE FAT. So if you want more fat stored, take more insulin! If you want less fat, eat less carbs and sugars! Your? body is perfectaly capable of making energy from fat... I do! I've cut almost all starchy carbs and sugars out of my diet and Im able to maintain a very intense exercise regime.

This is interesting and I don't mean any of this as criticism. Since my diagnosis, I have stopped drinking juice, which makes me sad because I love it. The reason I've stopped drinking it is because my physician always spoke of juice as the thing to take when I have a low blood sugar. And it makes the? blood sugar rise really fast, so I figured it's like the worst sin for a diabetic! So maybe I should rethink my policy? What do you think? What does your physician think? Would really like to know.

I always keep my blood sugar records, I do it on a spread sheet. I send copies between? visits to my doctor. I've learned to adjust insulin to compensate for most things. Pasta, I've decided is my biggest "bad" food item. Hits me worse than potatoes. I eat only whole wheat, healthy pasta, and very reduced amounts. I just try to skip any pasta more than have it. Example: I was at 92 before dinner, ate pasta, before bed (5 hours later, 199) and then even with a small amount it went up overnight 227

I agree with you on the bagels...or muffins too. They're? always in coffee shops and can't help but having one. Tough thing is not knowing the carb count. My diabetes is pretty well under control...6.7 A1C...but I do enjoy the specialty beers. Bad thing is I have no idea how many carbs are in those micro brewery beers. Beer makes my sugars sky rocket...then drops it in the long run. It has a very weird effect on my sugars. So, I tend to be careful when I drink alcohol...moderation!

You might want to see? my video to know what I feel when I'm low. For me it depends on how low though or what I did before the low happened.

Hi, I am a 19 year old year and a half Type 1 diabetic. I started on needles but then transferred to using the pump about 7-8 months ago. I've been having horrible rashes that have developed these? 2-3 months that are very itchy underneath the pod (omnipod user) and form a rash if i use the pod more than a day at a time. I was wanting to know if you know of anything that i could use? I've tried the barrier film wipes, and tried not using alcohol to clean my site but nothing is working!

When I have low blood sugar I have this feeling like when I am nervous or somebody just? scared me behind the door . If I have low blood sugar at nights I wake up and am confused and sweat ! And then actually just realize that I am not ok after 2 mins or so..

I use the Cozmo pump which is no longer made. See if you can get a pump demo from the different companies. It's a 4 year commitment. Kinda like buying a car, you might like some options others? have. Either way starting on a pump is a great thing.

great advice Bill...actually,its the best advice anyone could give...lows are serious? and if left untreated,they can be life threatening..i still have a little problem judging sometimes and it really keeps me on my toes cause i live by myself..

Hint #2 Call the sales representatives of all the Pump Companies and setup in Home demos of their pumps. Yeah the LOW LOWs are different from the early low stages. Low Lows for me I feel the same way, completely out of it. Like gettting a head rush where gravity is circling. Thanks for your comment, I read every comment I get on my vids and they truly make my? day.

Thats good advice I think. When I get really low I feel like physics stops making sense. For example, gravity will seem novel to me. I won't be able to understand it or it will seem like it is going the wrong direction. Also sometimes it will seem like? all the things in the room are osscillating towards me and then away from me. I don't know if that makes sense but they are the main indicators for me if I am really low (esp if I am waking up from sleep).

Always love your positive messages Bill! And, you hit the nail on the head about a low. Sometimes, I get a super craving for something sweet, almost like I can smell? something I associate with "sweets" faintly. Also, the fear (anxiety) like something is bothering me (when there really isn't anything bothering me). I start to feel this when I get a little below 70. When I'm below 50, I get a little panic sensation, but the hard shakes, heavy heartbeat, and sweating doesn't happen till below 45
