Even amateur astronomers as you mention know its just a comet. I thought this was a Japanese hornet. I found out it's called a Cicada killer and so that's what it was doing. I also surprisingly learned that if they sting, it's about as painful as a "pin prick". You can hear the Cicadas in the background. I'm glad I didn't kill it, sometimes those Cicadas can be very annoying.
