well you can't really switch off a nuclear reactor, the fuel rods need to be constantly kept cool, my question is why they can't insert the control rods? they are currently trying to control it by flooding the reactors with sea-water, but at the current radiation dosage it is currently unsafe to continue efforts for putting out fires or controlling meltdowns. Personally I would try and get my hands on some potassium iodide tablets for you and your family, just in case. ?

Because Chernobyl was not designed to protect against radioactive contamination, it looks like the "person in the open" received about 1,000 rads (10 Sievert) of radiation. Fukushima is at 1.5 Sievert. That's still high enough that you don't want to be anywhere near that,? but still survivable...if you don't play it in for long.
