Edwards (as I mentioned) are built in ESP's japan factory. Stock tokai pickups are good but the sheptones i put in there are far better. I'm not a huge fan of most duncans but that's personal preference. They make some good ones though? but none that really blow me away besides the pearly gate and seth lovers

Thanks, I'll try both tubes. I am aware that a few factories make their own tubes as well as? other companies' brand of tubes. I think it was Groove tubes, Sovtec, and Tungsol, at least 10 years ago they were. The Russians are way ahead of us in tube design I heard. I've heard a lot of good things about Ran guitars, made in Poland. They compete with U.S.A. Jacksons, but are a lot cheaper and still offer many options without using a custom shop approach. Soon they will get expensive though.

Thanks for the advice.? It really helped.

You usually see? chips in the wood on most Jacksons, and it's hard to avoid. Also my Epiphone will take up less room in the practice room of the teacher I just signed up for for lessons with. I'm left handed so the Epiphone will stick right outside the door of his practice room. You don't need and expensive guitar to practice scales and chords on, just when the sound quality of it is important. With the little Peavey combo, i could almost use the Epiphone on stage. I might try the P rail pickups.

The thing that got me about the epiphone was that one temporary roommate I had threw his Epiphone across the room and it hit a wall and fell, and there was barely a dent in the wood next to the input jack! I couldn't believe it. Here I was taking good care of my guitar, polishing it and washing my hands before I tried to play it each time, worried? that I would scratch it, and he heaves his at the wall, and it worked just fine! So I figured I'd learn on an Epi, and save my Jackson for later.

Wow, I'm surprised that it might be as good as an LP studio. The studio used to be considered as good as a Les Paul Standard, just without all the binding and frills. I definitely have to screw the bass side of the stop tail piece to get the action equal on all strings, and I noticed the A string vibrates twice as well as the other 5 strings do. lol. I wondered where the Edwards were built. They look? nice. The Tokais have good stock pickups, or would you replace them with duncans?
By: FastRedPonyCar. on 18 May 12, 02:56:14
A good epi is not bad at all. It won't be on par with a? good gibson standard but I'd say on par with the gibson LP studio. That said, a good epiphone will be a bit better than a poorly setup/fretted/etc gibson. I've played some really awful USA gibsons. The tokai LS150 though is on par with the 58/59 reissue Gibsons. They have cheaper models and the company edwards (built in ESP's japan factory) also builds KILLER les paul clones for about a grand.

Hi, I also bought a Epiphone les paul Standard for $300 to go with my Peavey 112 practice amp. How much better is your Tokai les paul than a standard Epiphone that lists at $1,100, $600 street, $450 used at the store I got it at. I think you once said the Tokai is better and cheaper than an equivalent Gibson Les Paul. That should blow my Epiphone away! Is your Tokai in the $1,000 range? Even the salesman at the store had heard of the Tokais and how good they are. Thanks? for any help.

Ill jump in here too since Ive owned 3 of the 4 amps in that series lol. Personally, I like Ruby tubes quite a bit. The best power tubes, IMO, for that amp, are SED winged C 6l6's, but they? are pretty pricey. Havent tried the kt66's, but Im interested. Preamp, just throw Rubys into the whole thing. Cheap, easy to find, sound great. Also, get a celestion k100 and get rid of the sheffield in there. Thatll make a WAY bigger difference in your tone than tubes.
By: FastRedPonyCar. on 16 May 12, 01:58:14
The 6505's I've played have had sort of a brittle top end when the gain is cranked. A couple of the NOS RFT 12AX7's (gotta get em off ebay) would probably help a bit.? For the power tubes, I'd say go with JJ's KT66's. They operate same as a 6L6 so you should be able to pop em in, tweak the bias a little and be good to go.

Great playing.? Good sound. thanks.
By: metalfiend124. on 15 May 12, 23:40:44
I just got a used Peavey 6505+ 112 combo ( really a 5150 ), and I wonder if you could tell me which preamp and Power amp tubes would help its' sound. It sounds like you like Ruby and Svetlana tubes. Having a sound similar to yours would really keep me happy. I heard Sovtec and JJ tubes are good, but I don't know, really. Peavey has 5 preamp 12ax7, 2 6L6 for 60 watts. I like this practice amp a lot, could you suggest some tubes that would sound decent clean and? decent cranked all the way up?
