If you want to hear the way people really played ragtime back in the day, I suggest first going and listening to audio recordings by such studio pianists as Christopher H.H. Booth (who recorded mainly for Victor as an accompanist to vocalists from 1900-1910, but also earlier for Berliner), Frank P. Banta (who? died in 1903, but did essentially the same thing also for Victor), Ernest L. Stevens (who made many audio recordings for Edison and piano rolls for Artempo)...

I humbly try to follow in this noble tradition as well. It is so easy to play ragtime in a contemporary style, whether simplified and re-harmonized (and "tricked-out") with contemporary pop piano stylings, or played in a "classical" manner the way most pianists play? "classical" music today (with much feeling sure, but exactly as-written, which is not exactly the way great pianists played it 100 years ago), or even with jazz stylings.

I disagree with you that "many" (or even most) of today's "ragtime pianists" do this with rags. As a veteran of the Ragtime Festival circuit, I can attest that most modern-day "ragtime performers" seem to? play the music exactly as written. The rest are not really "ragtime" performers at all, but jazz performers...

It was a surprise to find out that producers would add dynamics to piano rolls. But I shouldn't be surprised, I guess. If sheet music publishers routinely simplified works by Eubie Blake they can just as easily enhance a piano roll. I think Charleston #1 was enhanced with added dynamics. Simpler versions I've heard of The Charleston seem closer to how I imagine JP Johnson would have performed? it.

@acer: Some 30 years ago I was playing rock guitar, and I could play ANY solo played by famous rock guitarists of the time. When I first heard a jazz guitar solo, I thought I'm gonna play this sleeping with one finger. When I actually tried to play it, I felt my fingers were falling off. Jazz is a totally different thing, chord changes and runs are not as standardized and? routine as in most rock pieces.

I think it's really funny how this is something Django pulled out his ass when he was put in a studio and told to play something, and for generations gypsies and guitarists of all sorts study this piece. This is a real Jelly Roll Morton roll. I am not aware of any fake ones labeled "played by Jelly Roll Morton", all of those? that I know of really started out as him playing on the marking piano at one of the roll companies, in this case the Vocalstyle company in Cincinnati. Although they started around 1910(?), they made arranged rolls until buying, in 1918, the hand-played roll-recording equipment from the Wurlitzer company, that they'd used to make "Rolla Artis" rolls for a few years.

You are right about what I lovingly refer to as "noise notes" (static harmony notes played by the right hand above or below, and in rhythm with, the moving melody notes). They were used by many ragtime composers, particulary Morton, Julia Lee Niebergall, Tom Turpin, etc., as well as some of the New York writers. I think their usage is similar to the use of the fifth (short) string on? the five-string banjo: to emphasize the rhythm and syncopation of that particular melody phrase.

He probably? went to these same clubs where the three hanged out, only to be shut up by a pianist of comparable technical proficiency (Willie Smith in this case). Didn't Willie and Morton duel each other and Morton "kept quiet"? I'm not sure if Fats, Johnson, or Tatum cut with him, though,? but you saying that Morton "kept talking loud even though he lost" is quite doubtful. Jelly was possibly astounded by Willie's superior technique which finally shut his mouth. The one who really cut A LOT of pianists was Art Tatum, who beat Fats, Johnson, and Willie. Maybe you got mistaken...
