Wandering Knight Showreel - Tyler Goll

This is the latest project I have done. Titled "Wandering Knight," I made concept sketches for him, modeled him in 3DS Max, sculpted and painted him in ZBrush, rendered normals using XNormal, and then tweaked the textures in Photoshop.
The music for this video was done by one of my best buds, Tyler Smith.

congratulation (i assume u passed?) im looking into westwood online for game design. im actually goin for programming instead of art and animation but i was wonder what your experience was like. im a bit skeptical but this school looks like the best one that ive found but its hard to find unbiased reviews online. so im gonna ask u ?. hopefully u get this since its been a years since u posted but hit me up and? tell me a bit about ur experience in and after school. I'm on Animation, It seems it wasn't a required course on your major. We've been peers? before may be on a couple of classes or more but I fell behind due to personal schedules. I do remember you together with an asian instructor, forgot her name. It seems you are getting the hang of it. Have you tried the 2010 max version?

Hmmm... It doesn't look like I have taken this course. I? don't think it's required for me. I'm a Game Art & Design student. Just went through the catalgue though, that's for Animation students. So you go to Westwood and are in the Animation program?

Goat Mountain - Westwood College Online

Goat model was created in 3DS Max for my 3D Modeling class. I used the model for an animation in my Cinematography class. I had a lot of trouble with this honestly. 3DS Max did some really odd things while I was animating. Also, I didn't have as much time as I would have hoped. But I hope you guys enjoy it.

Oh ok. Cool man! For a rush job it looked pretty cool. And dude, that is one old computer to even try to do 3d animation on. Haha. I made my own computer and upgrade it every once in a while so it's still? really good I'd say. Quad core, 4 gigs of ram, gtx 286 graphics card (just got it). Cause really, 3d is my passion, and I'm not really that good at 2d animation... Haha. I try to focus on 3d modeling right now, but I always get distracted by school assignments! sigh.

I'm working on traditional and? 2d stuff with Flash. I'm going to dive into Toon Boom here shortly... I don't do much 3d mainly because my computer can't handle it - it's a 5 year old system with a celeron processor and is on the verge of a coma when running Maya. If you check my profile, I have a demo reel. Not that impressive, because they were all rush jobs.. I'll be working on a better demo reel soon.

Oh cool man! Very cool. So what have you gotten into since then? And yes, the fur added a ton of render time to it. Unfortunately you can hardly even see it because for some reason when I? rendered it, 3ds Max messed up a ton and the fur was way thinner than it was supposed to be...

I graduated WOL in '08.. Some people used 3ds max and some used MAYA. I used Maya and it was one the most frustrating experiences I ever had with a piece of software. Rigging, binding the skin, deformities,? and I would imagine all those hair textures you used on your goat slowed things down immensely did it not?

Thanks for the encouragement man. I don't think I'll be using this goat model again. It was my first model with controllers and in the process something went horrible wrong with some of the verticies on the face and stuff. *Sigh* I was really pleased with? the way it originally looked to. The fur modifier looked really good then the farther and farther he got from the grid, the thinner the fur got for some really odd reason. :)

Nice job for 2 days worth of work. My olny comments if you plan on going back and redoing this is to add some more animation to convey how hard the wind is hitting him. Also try video taping yourself? doing the animation for reference. Senior at Westwood in Cali. Nice Job :)

I know... I? only had 2 days to work on the actual animation, rigging, and editing really cause I had a ton of problems early on in the week with my goat model. It was a real pain. Otherwise I could have worked on the timing more...
