Hobgoblins is hands down the funniest of the Pearl episodes, followed very closely by? Track of the Moonbeast. I think the idea behind the movie (aside from being inspired by crack use as Tom and Crow suggested) was to capitalize on the whole "creature flick" craze of the 80's. You had Gremlins, Munchies and Critters all involving cute yet deadly little monsters that ran amok and caused crap. Gotta love it.

Thank you for the info. Didn't know it was meant to be a short. In defense of the film, though, I have to say I? did like the movie's theme of "country vs city", which was a more wide-spread literary/artistic theme a hundred years ago, but has now largely disappeared and replaced by the ubiquitous "civilized city vs primitive country".

This scene in the nightclub is the best part of the movie. The rest of it is exhibit A in how wonderfully awful films became when sound came in. Interesting aside - This film was supposed to be a two reel short, but while Jack Warner? was out of town it grew to 58 minutes in length. Warner was furious about this until the cash started rolling in. This film, "Lights of New York" and the part-talkie Singing Fool, also from 1928 are what started the talkie revolution, not The Jazz Singer.

Yeah, it's not really a gangster film, but for one reason or another, they put most of Cagney's early movies in that classification if they have anything to do with crime. Everything I had read,(in reviews on IMDB and such) called it a gangster film, but after watching it about a year ago, I wouldn't call it one. I didn't want to get complicated,? so I just mentioned it with the other movies because, as far as I know, it's not on DVD yet, and I think it should be! :)

You know, you hear this movie talked about a lot! Why hasn't it been released on DVD? I've never seen it before and, being a fan of the gangster? genre/early talkies, I really want to see it! There are four gangster movies that I know of that NEED to be released: "Lights of New York" (1928), "The Doorway to Hell" (1930), "City Streets" (1931), and "Taxi!" (1932). I've seen the latter three and they're really good!

Using a search, I easily found a vintage film site which has the DVD for sale. Since I'm not familiar with these old movies and don't know what to expect, I? can't speak to audio or picture quality. It was watchable. However, I was hoping for a bit better picture quality. The story managed to keep my attention though, and I'm the sort who will turn off a Hulu movie (or even a rented iTunes movie) if it just doesn't go anywhere.

I also miss these sorts of films... the true innovations... IDK why so many people think this movie is so bad. I think if you really look closely at all the adaptations of LOTR this one? actually has the most of the true feeling of the books, even more so than the Peter Jackson ones, as good as they are... :) Rankin Bass truly put out classic films. :)

I am a huge fan of those 60's specials...from Rudolph to Nestor the Long Eared Christmas Donkey...the Easter specials, all of it was so sincerely done and has such a? spirit of caring...I'm honestly disgusted at the stuff kids have to watch nowadays, nothing is done without a marketing ploy, and an "opportunity" to buy associated merchandise. I agree with you. Ofcourse, Rankin-Bass were experts at such careful emotional-capture, as they've done the stop-motion Christmas specials of the 60's, like "Rudolph the? Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman". It's likely a generational thing. These older animators just grew up at a time when purity and ethical values still mattered, not sarcasm and vulgarity.

Then again there are not many people left with the honesty and sincerity to? make an animated movie like this. IMO the 60s and 70s were an amazing period for "cartoons"....animators had a lot more creative freedom and instilled a lot of depth and meaning into their creations...for all the hype over Pixar and DIsney, I find those creations largely empty. All of it reeks of insincerity, I would rather watch these meaningful films that have human emotion than all the crap Disney puts out these days

Just wanted to say also, I have rarely seen such meaning and tearful beauty in the eyes of my fellow human beings as in these cartoon Hobbits. What an incredible effort it must have taken to draw such life into those eyes, such sincerity. They almost water with truth. I wish? modern animators drew like this instead of the cocky, exaggerated, overdone style they do these days. I guess it passes for social commentary but next to this it is like stick figures.

The Hobbit is a damn fine adaptation hindered by the fact its only 60 or so minutes. another half an hour or so would have made it perfect IMHO.
