'Proper' Technique is to have it on the left leg because it makes it less akward to hit high frets and holds the neck closer to your body, but a majority of modern players prefer to pick with their arm at? a 45 degree angle to their body not the old 'rub your belly' type picking. Kind of like how you should keep your thumb behind the center of the neck to improve finger span and reach. Most people would rather do the ukelele wrap your thumb of the top. Very few people are 'proper'.
