Have you considered rotory magnetic induction heating and utilizing a CPU heat sink with thermal compound for your cold side? Perhaps a high torque brushless DC motor used on RC airplanes to drive your induction rotor would be feasible. Your design is brilliant but? I'm just throwing out other kinds of methods to improve thermal throughput. Have you tuned your disc to respond at resonant vibrations at your average operating temperature? watch?v=8n5sSmJsCdY You should look at Nitinol as well.

If you calculate temperature difference of gas in degree of Kelvin, pressure changes linearly with? temperature if volume is constant (I hope I remembered this correctly from scool physics...). So if you have engine at 5bar at room temperature (cca 300K) and increase temperature of gas (complete volume of gas) to 600K (325degC) pressure would double to 10bar. Add inrease of pressure because of compression and you're there. (If I missed something, please correct me)

Hi! I realy don't know if my questions has some logic, or if you can unswer it, but i'll try! XD If we pressurize a stirling engine, let's say... with a safe low pressure of 5 bar, for example, wath could be it's maxium pressure inside the cylinder? I know that this question may have many variables involved, but if you? can answer with some objectivity, if you know, of course, I'll appreciate. This is fascinating. I always wondered why nobody made a Stirling with a metal diaphragm, rather than using a power piston, that way the forces of friction are reduced, while the deformation on the diaphragm with as a spring, so not totally lost ( as in case of friction) One thing I would have done different than you: the magnets I would arrange? in a pole shape to reduce the air drag to the max ( although you have some holes in it to reduce resistance). This is awesome work you did.

Thank you, Mr. Barumann for the quick response! Running the engine has become clearer. For core material, I did not offer a ferrite. Steel here is better, of course, but would make it out of sheet metal to reduce losses. Another question: what is the electric power? I think about 15 watts? It would be nice more current measure, the number of LEDs? does not give an accurate value of power. But in general - an excellent design! As on principle, as on execution.

Possibly ferrite core? It looks like steel to me. The displacer does not contact the diaphragm. The displacer is held in place by the small planar spring attached to the bottom of the displacer. The small planar? spring is secured between the hot cap and the gland. There are relief areas cut into the power piston to eliminate contact of the displacer bolts.

There is no laminate in this alternator, just a steel core. It was explained to me that it is in the way the coils are wound and wired together in series. As magnets meet the upper coil, voltage is created and current flows to the left and when the magnets meet the lower coils, the current flows th the right. This is acheived by the direction of the windings and how they are wired together. I made a drawing of the current flow but cant? post it here.

That is just wrong viewpoint of the magnet arrangements. Vibrating element serve as magnetic line of forces conductor, so two upper magnets (N left, S right) are connected together via this metal (steel). Two bottom magnets (also N to the left, S to the right) share the same vibrating steel piece to connect mag. lines of force along this element. It is easier to imagine if you want? to move attract magnets or push away - by applying voltage across el. magnets (one pair is upper..).

Still not ableto decipher how the generator produce AC? It is quite simple, but yet amazing.? There are two electromagnets, each has two coils (with U shaped laminate core). Both electromagnets are connected in series in order to produce target voltage (~12V). Let's imagine only half of the generator. When N/S upper part of the magnets vibrate, it approaches and moving away from the coils. When say, approaches to such el.magnets, it produce positive cycle, when move away, negative.

I don't believe it starts on air. It uses air to meter the fuel and atomize it, as well as to pressurize the engine itself. And? yes the air is stored in the roll cage.

Philips did a lot of research back in the 50s-60s into Stirling engines for power generation. This was their only commercial product, which runs on kerosene fuel and produces 180 watts of power for driving radio equipment. It has a very complex fuel system which atomizes the fuel and meters it into the burner- all powered by air. Philips never ventured further into Stirling engines, but instead applied the technology to something? else- Stirling cryocoolers- considered the finest in the world.

Beautiful work. Does adding coolant flow increase power output significantly? I would love to see you design? a larger version, using as many off the shelf parts as possible. Your 10cc design could be very useful for estimating the size engine needed to produce a useful amount of power from heat sources such as methane from anaerobic digestion or parabolic solar. The heat from the coolant line could increase the efficiency of a digester fuel source. Wonderful work, please post more!

On the downward stroke of the piston the air in the crankcase is compressed, this increase in pressure is allowed to pass through the snifting valve which is a one way device and enter above the piston, this ensures that the air leaking past the? piston rings is always in a downward direction this stops the oil from going upwards into the hot end of the engine, it also puts the linkage in compression all the time making for a quieter mechanism. The thermal efficiency of a Stirling engine depends on the? absolute temperatures of the hot and cold sides of the cylinder. I think you need to divide the difference between the two by the absolute temperature of the hot side. Therefore if the cold side is at 10C (283K) then the hot side needs to heat up to 293C (566K) for 50% efficiency. Of course the heater may let a great deal of heat escape, but I've seen designs that use the incoming combustion air to recover a good deal of that.

Hi Mike, Great minds think alike, I have not made any measurements yet as it isn't sited at its final resting place as you will see in the video the wind here is very turbulent. Also? the wings are only expanded polystyrene covered in brown paper and havn't yet been fibreglassed. It starts on its own OK as I am using a flat bottomed airfoil section. Cont'd: Can you measure tip speed ratio, (TSR) ie ratio of blade speed to wind speed? My versions always self ran up to about TSR=1. I had to add powerr? to spin them up to about TSR=2, then they produced real power and accelerated unloaded to TSR about 4. But then you need a brake or risk serious injury trying to slow it down any other way. Looking forward to your updates! cheers Mike

Nice video. Only one part I don't like is measuring of the output power. Lamps has no fixed resistance -? as it heats up, resistance increases. So, it will be better to use voltage AND current measurements instead to get exact measurement of the output power. I bet you will find your generator is more efficient than your math show. What has poor efficiency is this drill (waste heat, cooler fan, bearings...).

Very nice build. I particularly like the heater tubes and burner housing. The housing looks hydroformed. One of the key features of the rhombic drive is the theoretical perfect balance. Meijer used to put a nickel coin on the machines during demontrations. He would set the coin on edge and show that it didn't fall over while the engine was running. A friend once commented that the balance was amazing, he had seen a demo where the engine seized a? bearing and the nickel didn't fall.

Although the efficiency of the generator is not top notch, I don't think it really matters for this example, because I'ts a transversal problem to all electric generators. This project is awesome. an idea: If you intend the engine to run off gas all the time then you could route the fuel through coils in place of the liquid coolant..don't know if that's efficient but my theory is that the gas is cooled as it decompresses,? absorbs heat thereby cooling the cylinder and preheating the gas for more efficient burning, all without a pump or a fan.

That is a nice engine. I had an idea about using a refrigerant like ammonia or freon in a sterling engine, incorporating expansion valves to change the freon from a super heated liquid into a gas utilizing the refrigerants? to make the engine more efficient. If the resistance in the engine is minimal enough I believe this engine would be able to pull the heat from our environment as its fuel source.

Great work! The people with the big bucks making the large solar concentrators have developed these to output 3, 10, and even 25 KW! They use helium or? hydrogen, and of course a tremendous amount of solar energy is focused on them. If someone like you could develop a 2 or 3 KW unit for solar, there would be a very large market for that in the near future, I think, because it's quite simple to generate solar thermal but not so simple to convert it to electricity. It's a wide open market.
