Seems that the Explorer you borrowed could use a good setup. The action on mine is quite low and it's very fluid to play. Everyone is particular to guitar necks, and I'm no exception. I like fat necks and? some Strats, but that depends on the year. I absolutely hate the thin, flat necks on Charvels, whereas other people love 'em. The upside is that you're not out any money for a guitar you don't like.

I have no experience with the dirty fingers. I have an explorer borrowed from a collegue, it has those 500t/498r ceramic pickups. they are ridiculously hot (around 20k or ca. double the output of a PAF) my biggest complain is tha harsh treble, and indeed, they are not very clear when played clean. the guitar itself isn't well thought out either imo. it has these hot pickups for metal, but quite a high action and fat neck like a classic Gibson, so it's not a fast player lol ?

I've never taken the pickups out so I can't say for sure. From what I've read the "Dirty Finger" pickups were standard for this guitar at the time. I know some people have complained of 'muddy' sounding explorers, so perhaps that is what the 500T's are like? These pickups have a hot sound to them reminiscent of? Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups, but a bit more full bodied. That may be due to the weight and bulk of the wood though. It's a heavy guitar.

need4zpeed is right. First and 5th numbers indicate the year. The 3 numbers in between indicate the day of the year it was made. Yours is 1980, produced on the 127th day of the year.? Seriously, no chance you would sell that is there? Ready to buy!
