Rick, you just need a box or a bin, something that you can pull the edges of the bag over to keep the bag open, and then shovel the dirt into the bag/bin and when the bag is full, you just pull it out of the bin, put a new bag in, tie up the full bag and put it to the side until you are ready to go to the dump. Or put the bag to the side in a wheelbarrow and? when the wheelbarrow is full of bags, wheel it out to the van. It is just a thought, idea, and suggestion is all. Not trying to "boss" you.

P. S. Of course watching this curiosity programs is a lot less expensive fuel wise than actually doing it yourself in your own vehicle so I have to give you that one. It's a nice way to go exploring on a minimal budget. What I like about recording TV shows in advance is you can fast forward through the commercials. Don't like commercials or advertisements? and usually mute them when they come on. Don't care to listen to them. Prerecording the show lets you fast forwards through the adverts.

Love the shed walking away, reminds me of the goodies. Why dont you save yourself a trip to the tip/dump and use the broken up concrete floor or bricks as drainage in areas where you have clay under the soil or even in big pots when you grow flowers or even build a raised bed from broken concrete? and brick pieces, it saves putting it in landfill Rick. cool video as always

Interesting and amusing video. We've all had silly moments. I once painted the garage floor with epoxy floor paint and did the classic mistake of starting from the wrong end while the garage door was? locked. I think the red beetle was a Cardinal beetle. The adults live around or under bark and the larvae are wood feeders. They're redder and a bit bigger than the common Soldier beetle.

thanks rick, ill bear your concerns in mind. definately have to try and select the right kind of chips, from what i could gleam from the film, a lot of it seems to be pine, plenty of time to research and source before autumn prep starts. Also, i noticed that its important not to till it in at all, else the nitrogen thing is a big issue, a guest on the film says that? around 1/3 way through. Anyway, again, great channel rick. Rick, do you have to paint the shed? Red sounds to me like it would stick out like a sore thumb on your allotment, but then maybe that's what you want? I kind of like the natural wood look of it. Maybe if you just weatherized it with some kind of clear coating so the elements don't ruin it before its time? I don't know? It is just a thought. Anyway, you are going to do whatever you want. If you want to paint the shed red, then so be it. :-) ?

Rick, just grab onto the top of the shed, bring your feet and legs up through the? window and climb out that way. Or pull yourself up from the top of the shed, put your feet on the window ledge, and climb up and over the shed that way. Thankfully there was no roof on the shed yet. ;-)

At least you had the window there so you could reach out of it. Worse case scenario you could always try a flying leap out (maybe not) or just unscrew one of the panels and let yourself out that way or you could always yell and hope one of your neighbors hears you. Rick you should look at renting a jackhammer or "Breaker" as they? are apparently called, you can get hand held ones and also big standing ones. Must be the week for shed projects! I've? started to remove my one. Previous owner built it without using a spirit level or knowing the importance of levelling off the base. In fact he dropped one corner to get it under the eaves of the garage then cut the door to fit the wonky frame. I think he used the Crooked House at Southend sea front as inspiration.

What makes you think they are aliens coming from many? light years away. There are some inetresting theories about how these things are created (apart from the Human one). Not sure what I believe, I never buy-in to, or reject a hypothesis or theory, I just observe out of curiosity keeping an open mind, and note down what I see, filiing it away as experience, for possible future reference. I find this is a good way to get through life. "Belief" is too consuming to get involved with :o)

Hi Rick. All crop circles have one thing in common. They all have tractor tracks or a? path running through them and they appear during the hours of darkness. The reason no one claims these "artforms" is they lay themselves open to a criminal damage lawsuit from the land owner. Alians travel billions of miles to earth just to make some marks in a field. Yeh right! Columbus did'nt sail to America only to leave crop circles and then sail away, he spoke to the locals. Jeff

To be honest, that does look as if it could be man-made. However, I don't believe that all crop circles are. I don't think they have much to do with aliens though - although I keep an open mind on that. I? think they may have something to do with the Earths magnetic field or (given the numerous sightings of ball-lightning around them) static electricity. But then again they do seem to turn up very close to ley lines (another interesting subject) so maybe those are something to do with them.

No probs. I was thinking there seems to be alot of plots available around our area all of a sudden. I mean it is? april/may 'new tax year' time, so for those people looking for plots maybe if you get onto your local council, you might have a better chance of getting one. I mean it seems the council ask people to renew their? applications around the same time (april) and if people don't reply, then plots become available all at once. Hi Rick.I have watched all your vids so far and love them.I FINALLY GOT MY ALLOTMENT? LAST WEEK after 2 years! The good thing was the waiting forced me to start growing things in my own garden.I am not sure about the lettuce, but I know the strawberry runners you planted should have been stuck in the ground at the bud end and not at the stalk end. If you think about it when the plant sticks the runners out it is this part which touches the ground. It then makes roots.Same family as brambles.

Yellowing can be due to nitrogen deficiency , I had this problem as i added wood chip to some compost to bulk it up and everything wilted and yellowed. Turns out when wood is broken down the fungi and bacteria? use nitrogen to grow, then when they die it gets released back into the ground Along those lines anyway. My worm tea and chicken manure stew sorted it out. if you wait until the runners develop a few roots put the first one in and the string of them will continue growing. I turned 5into30

Cont. Also, next year you might think about doing some prep work for the soil. At the end of the season this? year turn in LOTS of organic matter; ie. manure/compost. You wont need to worry too much about 'feeding' at all next year. Maybe only a few times of compost 'tea' for the heavy eaters. ie tomatos/potatos/winter squash and the like. And by a few times that depends on the weather and the growth of the plant. 1x wk/month. If you want to count that as a 'few times', hehe. ^.^

Whoo, you asked a few questions there and here's my answer, hope its helpful; first, kale chips, absolutly deliscious. Also great in veg soups/stews. 2nd, most people have already mentioned strawberries so I wont go there. 3rd, the lettuce. My suggestion would be that they are too wet since some are fine in one area and not in another. It could also be the food for the tomatos, it may have been too much for them. Let them dry out and don't feed them again for awhile. Yellow is a? sign of stress.

Hey Rick, be patient with your strawberries. They will not produce a large crop until the 3rd year. I learned the hard way, when I ripped? out a whole strawberry patch during the 2nd year because they were barely producing, then a coworker told me that you have wait for the 3rd year for bumper crops. -_- I had to start all over again with my strawberries this year. Good tip on trimming the runners until later in the season. Keep the allotment vids coming, I watch them all. :o)

Hi Rick, thanks for sharing the video. A little bit of advice with the strawberry runners, if you cut the runner off and trim it to 2" before the leaf and pin the runner into the ground with a 'u'? piece of wire you may get a new plant. Will need regular watering. Normally I leave the runners a little later when their is signs of rooting then I snip and put into pots. 90% of my plants were done this way.

Rick, actually myth not busted. The reason it isn't working is because that tape is designed for using on the ground. It's designed for planters and wooden raised flower beds. The? copper builds a static charge when used like this as the wood or better still plastic are not good conductors, but when the tape is on the grounds it is earthed, so no static build up. So don't throw it away, keep it for your pots. Hope this is helpful.

Hi, no, I don't have any videos of me playing the flute. Part of my "training" in this? is from playing three woodwind instruments, the clarinet, the bassoon, and the saxaphone. But my main instrument is the clarinet, which is a lot like the Native American (NA) flute, only the clarinet also has keys that you have to learn whereas the flute does not. I do play the NA flute also as mentioned just for fun. But the knowledge I shared here, is what I have learned simply through trial and error. :-)

As for the notes, each note is either a covered or an open hole, and then you can also blend fingers by covering only certain holes while leaving others open. Whatever notes you discover on the instrument, they can be applied across the board for all three octaves. They will only come out in their respective octaves, high, middle, and low, but the notes and fingering stay the same, so you only have to find and figure out the notes once. The octaves come by breath control. Hope all? this helps.

First? you have to find and learn or know your octaves and what they sound like. Then you need to create notes out of each octave by learning the sounds of each finger hole being opened or covered. Then fit the notes together in the different octaves and that is how you make a melody. You are going to need to get creative here, but I know you are up for it because you are creative. You are an artist. So use the notes as your paints, your breath as the paint brush, and "paint" us beautiful music

Rick, learn the different octaves by practicing the different sounds. The upper octave sounds like birds chirping, kind of high pitched. Yes, and so will the animals and/or birds. The F flute resonates with the earth and trees. That's the sound it is created after. So if Rick learns this instrument, it will relax him as well. It will relax all of us if he decides to play this flute for us, maybe on a new "royalty free album" maybe? The F flute is very calming and relaxing to listen to. It's deep earth tones sound. That's what I have also, an F flute, and it is very? relaxing to listen to. :-)

There you go, now you are doing it. Sometimes it helps to close your eyes and "feel" the music. Then just let it flow out of you through the instrument. You have to work with the instrument, and it will work with you, if you know how to handle it, so master it. You can do it. Just take it one step at a time and adjust when necessary. The squeeks will go away? before you know it. P.S. Like the scuba divers at the intro. Have not seen that one before. Very nice though. :-)

Keep the flute close to your body, so it is pointing more toward the ground instead of holding it out away from your body at an angle. Away from your body will make it have a higher pitch as well. Holding it closer to your body where you get more of a straight stream of air will keep you in the lower tones. That's what practice is for, for "working on me abilities." But you will, "you will get on just fine." Also Rick,? don't slouch. Sit up straight. That will also help with the air flow.

Yes, there we go. You found it. Notice how your held your head and neck? differently. The breath was coming up from your diaphram in a straight stream and then you got the low note. See, you are figuring it out. Good job! You're funny! LOL :-) Yes it's not the machinery, it's the machine operator. Now you are figuring it out. LOL :-) Yes! That was good actually, those fast notes you just played. See you get different sounds from your breath work. The notes just move around in those sounds.

See you are already figuring it out. The sound will change depending upon your breath. The trick really to playing this instrument is all in the breath control. You don't have to worry about or think about anything else other than breathing. Listen to the sound and change it accordingly. Keep your breath steady and flowing. If you start out with a low note with all holes covered on the flute and then you squeek and then go back to a low sound again, it's because you? broke your breathing pattern.

One is controlling and makes you "squeek," the other is working with the instrument and just letting it do it's own thing, bring out it's own melody. If the sound is too high, you are blowing air? in too hard. Let the sound come from deep within you, the belly area. Let the instrument literally become an extension of you. Breath comes out of you and through the instrument into the air. That was better (the second time/try). You have to rest and relax yourself, which you probably won't do "on camera" so do it in private. Rest and relax yourself, let the music or melody come from within you, and then play. It is like your soul expressing itself.

The "bird" Rick, not the "gizmo." LOL It's called a "bird" although it can be just a block of wood or carved in the shape of any animal. Doesn't have to be? an actual "bird." The nice thing about these flutes is that you don't have to "tune" them. Usually the one who made the flute has tuned it for you before hand as he is making it. So, did you get an animal carved for your bird or just a shapely block of wood? Can't tell from here. It looks nice, regardless though. :-)

Yeah!! The flute has finally arrived! I was just going to say, see if the hard case fits in the cloth case, or put a strap on the hard case and carry it on your back. Was just going to say the same thing. :-) Does it smell like wood. It should have like a natural smell to it the way you would smell pine or something,? a wood smell. Very nice flute. They do usually sign their flutes, the people who make them. F sharp minor, LOL I think you got the same flute I have note wise. :-)

Actually, I think you did quite well for a first time. They are not easy to use, and to get the sound you want, takes a lot of practice. I never got that far, but I had 4 kids to fight at the time. I really hope you use it often, and I would love to hear you playing it, even though you feel like a dummy when you? try it. I did!. But it's fun to see someone try, and trying is what's important. Congratulations on a beautiful flute, only wish you showed it in a better light, the wood - Beautiful!

A good control for slugs, believe it or not, are ducks. As far as I understand they wont hurt the plants but will eat the slugs. They love slugs. So if you know abody with ducks around you, you might be able to borrow them. Although I would wait for the slug pellets? to disolve first so the ducks don't make themselves sick. :)

Cheer up Rick, weather is rubbish everywhere but it'll soon get better. The slug problem is annoying, I? found once I got rid of them the first year was a lot easier the next. Keep on with it, am sure in a few months time you'll have loads of veg everywhere.

Love these videos. I'm on the west coast of Canada so similar climate (about 5-15 celsius around now and WET). Try sowing some spring onions around everything that is getting eaten. Slugs apparently don't? like the smell. Also, that thing about filling up the beds with food plants to keep out the weeds works great. I can't wait to really get going outside. Regarding the water-but you could get another and cut a hole and put a pipe? to the next one for overflow you could put a valve incase you did or didn't want to overflow. My father get these empty 300 litre hard plastic barrels from his workplace rubbish desposal. Just goto local manufacturing company and ask them. I think they used to contain some cleaning fluid for the machines. He buys taps off eBay and puts them on at the bottom of the barrel and makes a gutter system at top.

Two thoughts. Keep weeds down by thickly seeding lettuce and brassica greens. In your climate they would dominate. Then use them as microgreens in your salads or green drinks. I also do this with radishes, and I buy those seed in bulk when I can. As you thin them, you give the mature plants more room to grow and you have edible filler to crowd out the weed. I am told, although I don't have them, that straw and rough mulch discourage slugs. ?

Rick, where to start! You've worked very hard. Be patient and take a chill pill! The weather will change and plants that aren't thriving will begin to. As to the weeds, nature will put a plant everywhere you don't. I don't see any mulch? to defend against the weeds. At this point, you need to hand weed as much as possible an get some mulch to help the fight. Put the pellets in dishes in and about the garden. Really surprised with the potatoes. They don't like cold temps.

I think the? nematodes are still around. When you watered the plants the water got absorbed into the soil and the nematodes were able to situate themselves. I don't think the water washed them away. I think they are probably still somewhere in the soil. All is not lost. :-) It looks like your polytunnel doors stayed closed though through the whole wind and rain ordeal so that is good. If you are thinking about weed killer, they should have something in the stores that kills the weeds but doesn't affect your produce. I see it on commercials here on TV sometimes so I know something like that has to exist. Do you have a family member who has a garden store? Perhaps they could give you some counsel on this? I don't think any gardener gets past weeds though. They are just a fact of life when it comes to gardening. The trick is learning how to? work with them or get around them.

The polytunnel looks great, strong and sturdy, and like it "passed the weather test." Great job building it! :-) As for the water puddles, I think? your plants will survive the water puddles. Plants are very resilient and I don't think they will "drown" per se. The soil around them will just absorb the water and the plants will pull from that water resource when they need it. Just see it as water in storage for them for later on. The plants I think will bounce back once the water has subsided.

When I was a very young kid, the neighbors would pay us $0.01 per slug that we put into a coffee can. Once collected they poured salt on them and that was that. With? that method, you should over due the borders of the allotment to keep the migrant forces at bay. And any wash will help spread it over the allotment. With any luck the pidgeons were eating the slugs. We encourage birds here or else we have grasshoppers in abundance. And nothing is safe, not even the bark on the trees.

Copper tape is the way to go, but you need to get rid of the slugs first. Pellets are bad for the? birds, salt can effect the soil and growth of your plants and worm parasites are dangerous, copper tape is definately the way to go. You've done a lot of work Rick, well done. Great videos too.

Hi Rick, from 6.13 to 6.31 your water barrel looks like it is full, so the polytunnel gutter is really working AND you must have gotten a lot of rain lately, because it was not even one-quarter full the last time we saw it in your video?? With it being full of water now, do you know what you are going to do with the water yet? I know you wanted to set up some type of system to water the plants inside the polytunnel. i have used the same nematodes as you on a slightly larger plot about 4 years ago and i have had a reduced? slug problem since then, i may use them again this year as they do the job well, i don't know if its a case that no slugs mean no eggs or if they last longer than it says on the pack but they are worth the cost

Good luck with? the slugs, they are a nightmare to deal with. Copper tape, Rick you could cut the bottom off a old cheap plastic pot, cut it to size and put the tape on it. Then you can put it around the plants.

Regarding the copper tape, 18mm is probably a little bit thin to deter slugs: something like 2" would be more effective. If the copper tape doesn't work for you, Phasmarhabditis Hermaphrodita are good for killing slugs - a £20-25 box should treat 100 sq m of soil - plenty if you only use it near vulnerable plants. Beer isn't a good idea, as the yeast attracts insects. Ours never killed any slugs, but about 50 insects. It's a waste? of good beer, too). Salt damages the soil, so is also a bad idea

No joke, place a few aluminum pie pans, pressed into the soil at ground level, in the garden with BEER in it, and you will get tons of slugs and even snails. They go right to it, but it kills them. Just empty the pan and refill until their gone. As far as the potatoes go, let them get about 6-8 inches tall, then cover all around them with? hay several inches thick, no weeds and the potatoes will even grow in the hay. You can use straw too, but hay feeds the soil better, leaves too. Good luck!

It's been raining here? all day too so I can relate. Don't worry though about your plants seeming to come to a halt. They will pick up growing again. Plants, like people, work in stages. If you think about it, when something is cold it closes up to keep warm. But when it is warm outside, it opens up to flourish and grow. As a living thing, plants are the same way. It's cold right now so the plants have closed up but when the weather warms up a little more, I believe they will begin to grow again.

Potatoes are hoe'd up, to protect the actual potatoes under the leaves from getting exposed to the sun. If they are not hoe'd up, they turn green and you can't eat them. It is too early in their growth yet to cover, but the idea is to cover with soil, the higher the main leaves grow, so the? bottom leaves always sit on the soil. I hope that helps : )

Oh my goodness that is awesome. The potatoes are starting to coming up. That is wonderful. The leaves on the potato plant have to become big. It is way too early to unearth them. The plant/leaves are only just now starting to bloom. Give them time. That is my opinion from having grown potatoes years ago in my garden but I am no expert. That water and puddles, that is just from the rain, right? If yes then it will evaporate. It will water the? plants and eventually evaporate. No need to worry. :-)

My dad didn't have any growing issues after using the salt, but he did manure the soil and change it around every year, by changing it around I mean he would barrow some from one area to? another, rotating the soil, he did quite well with it. Good luck Rick :-)

Hi, decided to look up coriander online: "The word coriander in food preparation may refer solely to these seeds as a spice rather than to the plant. The seeds have a lemony citrus flavour when crushed due to terpenes linalool and pinene. It is described as warm,? nutty, spicy, and orange-flavored." I think the leaves are the cilantro part. It is possible that I could be mistaken, I would not rule it out, but I also know what cinnamon is. No the coriander I am used to and am thinking about looks like little balls or pebbles that you put in a pepper mill type of device and it crushes the coriander for you like a pepper mill would crush or grind whole peppercorns. My parents are both German immigrants so my mother would? make Christmas cookies that were a bit "spicy" for me, like gingerbread and such. I don't really like gingerbread.

Looks like some good results in your polytunnel. What if you could sling up some suspension wires the full length of the tunnel then run some vertical wires off of those to support some frames or shelves. The set up would be like a suspension bridge. So? long as the end hoops are strong enough then it should take the weight.? It would make a nice engineering/gardening project rolled into one.

Your allotment is coming along in leaps and bounds. Great to see your items have began to grow and shoot. Have you considered using the tomato grow bags inside of your poly tunnel. My Dad always uses those and gets great results? every time. I like the idea of using your height space in the poly tunnel. Maybe something like hanging baskets ?

carrots needs fine soil to grow, any lump in the soil will make them grow into weird shaped carrots..the best way is to get a carrot dibber, and push it into the ground..then fill the hole with sand/john innes number 1..then sow the seed into the pre? prepeared hole. :)

O yes I have to tell you something? about the lumpy clay! Last year I put the lumps in a bag but never got rid of it. After winter it is now just small lump clay, the frost broke it so I mixed the smaller lumps with some compost and mixed it back in the soil. Worms will do the rest.

Everything looks like it's growing wonderfully. Noticed a couple times you weren't sure if things should grow outside or in the tunnel. Wanted to suggest that you go around and mark the name tags with a bit of yellow or any color actually on the ones for outside or on the tunnel plants. Either? way the marks will keep you from wondering where they go and save you from having to go back and check. Can't wait to see the bounty of results from all your hard work.

I just bought a Red Dragon VT 2-23 SVC weed burner. They recommend that you do not have to try burning the? weed out totally but just flame it long enough to make it wilt, which is pretty quick, really. Just enough that if you squeeze it, you'll leave a thumbprint on its leaves. I'm also curious about your mounding system for root crops. Have you done that before? I've always just planted them on level ground. Most things seem to work alright but my carrots don't always grow very uniform sizes.

You need to cover the ground with mulch when your seedlings come up. If you look at nature, the ground is never exposed. In the forest the ground? is covered by leaves and decaying trees, elsewhere it's covered by living grass and other plants, with old decaying stems and leaves on top of the soil. Bare soil is a man made phenomenon, which is why garden plants need lots of care compared to plants growing in the wild.

I know what you mean with the 'greasy' comment - my garlic doesn't look very happy. I hear grapes like clay, but I might be wrong. Apart from that, I? haven't a clue! Tune in at the end of the growing season and I should have a much clearer idea about what plants prefered the clay soil.

Always the constant threat of frosts here too Paul till about May. It's not that? often where there are more than 1 or 2 people there at the same time during the week. The wekends is a different story and there's always someone to chat with. A lot of the folks there are quite old and prefer to tend their allotments very early in the morning.

Wine that is bottled with sugar still in it becomes sparkling. You should only do this if you have bottles designed to take pressure(coke/champagne style) if not you can end up with the bottles exploding on you. This is a shame if it is a plum wine, but an real? pain if it is blackcurrant and you have to repaint the ceiling! I can recommend waiting until the elderflowers are out, and making elderflower champagne as it is one of the best sparkling homebrews you can make.

Joe, my juicer is a real cheap one from Argos "cookworks"? i think. Been really impressed with the results it gives. I did debate getting a bigger/better one but figured for the money, I wouldn't be gaining much. I find my juicing enthusiasm tends to go in phazes, so it will spend 7 months a year gathering dust in the cupboard, so not worth spending lots on unless you are planning on juicing all year round.

You need about a week or two for the carbonation to form before you pasteurize it. The best way to do this is by making many bottles and opening one a day until it's at the point of carbonation you want, then pasteurize the rest. I should add the? disclaimer that I have not done this with wine bottles before, only with 12oz beer bottles of ciders, but the same should work for 750ml bottles too... maybe leave them in the water for a little longer.
