The problem with this is that in low-light situations, you won't want a? bright screen and therefore you won't see the keys. I've never successfully been able to use a keyboard by the light of the screen and I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm leaning towards the series 5 because of the pricing and the ports, but the lack of a blacklit keyboard could be an issue. I literally? have not used a laptop at night in any sort of recent memory, so I dont know how that would work. I'm a student going into college, so the backlight might be important if say im writing something at night. How well can you see the keys in the dark just by the brightness of the screen?

Thanks Chippy. I looked into this on my end: The Series 5 uses an ELAN touchpad. ELAN requires you to download its drivers through the manufacturer (Samsung). The option isn't? in the Samsung iteration of the drivers. Sadly, ELAN does not offer it's own iteration. So unless I find a third-party driver somewhere, I can't disable the feature. But as I said, not a major nuisance...this is mostly a business laptop. Keep up the great reviews.

Great to have that feedback. Thanks coplaniuk. Touchpads locking up with key-presses is due to 'palm rejection.' effects. Some touchpads are set to turn off, briefly, when keyboards are being used. It stops mouse? movement when palms accidentaly touch the pad when typing. The Lenovo U300S has the same issue. There are some configuration options in the mouse properties with some touchpads that reduced the effect. Take a look in the mouse settings in control panel. Chippy.

Have the Samsung series 5 13.3" that I bought in part because of one of your earlier reviews. Love the laptop in general. My only complaint is the touch pad. During normal office use, it's fine and perfect.? But I do occasionally like to play games - nothing taxing - and the pad locks up with key presses. Mouselook in 1st person is therefore not feasible. But a side-arm mouse solves that. Otherwise, awesome machine. Thanks.

I had zero chance to test the XPS 13 battery life in the 48 hours it was in the studio. However, all 4 devices seem to be very close. I haven't experienced anything that highlights inefficient engineering yet. All of the devices are more or less going to average 10W in average usage which means the one with the biggest battery, wins. 5hrs of office/web? usage is a baseline for all these Ultrabooks.
