I will be honest, I did not know who TW was until I started getting my degree in Music at my current university. Now I'm working on getting TW's discography. Sure, I'll still listen to a lot of drummers of today that have a name (the couple that come to mind are Portnoy,? Matt Greiner, and Chris Adler). But I'm always amazed by TW, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Max Roach, and the like.

TW used that riveted cymbal due the sparseness of the music of its self. in a big you have a lot more instruments to cover any space in the? music. with this quintet they all needed somethign to give them a constant backgroud sound. thus a riveted ride ride. it was a purely genius move in my opinion. but all in all. this was my absolute favorite miles quintet. absolute masters of jazz.

It ends up being a musical distraction. Especially with K's. It's a bad idea that got popular and stayed on passed its time. From reading Miles' autobiography and different interviews, I don't think Tony was afraid? of anyone musically. He came right in and started giving poor George Coleman shit! But who knows. They got together initially pretty informally, I think at Miles' house, and just played together while Miles listened remotely in another room, I think, so it was probably pretty chill.

BBC-Radio-2 is doing a four part documentary starting tonight, Jan.9, at 7pm GMT. Commercial free. How come American radio never takes the time to honor ppl this way? Brits cover everybody but our radio just airs the same old same old? 24/7.

Guys who drone on and on about technique are almost always incredibly derivative, boring, and masturbatory players to actually listen to. Real drummers speak with the kit, not with their college degrees. Anyway, some good comments here. I agree that nobody? has matched Krupa's intense passion, but I would say that Bonham is in the ballpark -- ironically a hard rock drummer (but the best there will ever be, and not for the reasons some empty clowns think).

Moeller technique has no modern application. Actual Moeller technique was an upstroke prior to an accent. There was nothing? modern about Krupa, other than his set. Comparing Buddy, Bellson, or whoever to Krupa is like comparing apples and oranges. None of these guys had better technique than Krupa. Krupa was a student of Moeller. Any of you familar with this "Moeller" technique? Moeller learned rudimentary drumming from a military camp during the cival war and documented it. "Moeller technique" these days is being advertised as this 'whipping' motion used to get triple strokes but that actually is not truly? the technique at all

His technique was closer to that of a field drummer from the cival war era. Most of his double strokes consisted of a? combination of up strokes and accents. He didn't tend to bounce the sticks off the heads for his doubles.
