Failed Experiment - measuring pressure with plastic syringe.
The tip of the syringe is melted shut.
The syringe contains 10 mL of air.
I react some NaHCO3 and sulfuric acid in a cola bottle to produce pressure but the syringe's head doesn't move in.

I did read the description plus the comments prior to writing. Okay, sorry, I thought the tip was melted as a side effect of the experiment, not that you purposefully melted it as to keeping those 10ml of air at "natural" pressure inside. My apologies. Yes, the friction is obviously too much or the pressure in the bottle too little.? I guess you'll need a lot more pressure in order to compress that air inside the syringe. I see you're not using gloves. What's the concentration of that H2SO4?

How did you expect the syringe to move? The pressure being the same at the tip and at the? push botton, it just won't move. For this to work you'd need to make a tight hole in the bottle and let the tip in the outside. I'm not saying you should do it thou. This experiment feels a little too dangerous and silly. Sorry.

I'm not sure what you mean by bad engineering method. It didn't work because there is too much friction? inside the syringe, therefore the "handle" thing of the syringe stayed in place.

Lead Oxide

A solution of NaCl.
Copper cathode and lead anode.
6 volts was used.
Normally, chlorine and oxygen would be given off but in this case I think the oxygen reacts with the lead to form lead(II) oxide (PbO) because the substance looks redish. There is also a strong chlorine smell.

Well of course if you use an Hg anode, then of course results will be different because the Na(+)/NaHg (amalgam) pair has a higher potential, therefore some NaHg will be made which could be separated by evaporation (very toxic though). But you don't need elemental Na to make NaOH, Look it's simple: Water: H2O --> H(+) + OH(-) Cathode: 2 H(+) +? 2 e(-) --> H2 Anode: 2 Cl(-) --> Cl2 + 2 e(-) == Overall: 2 Cl(-) + 2 H2O --> H2 + Cl2 + 2 OH(-) The Na(+) does nothing so you get NaOH

The most abundant positive ions are Na+. Also, the method used? to prepare NaOH uses this exact concept along with a Hg cathode. I am in fact preparing KOH with Hg cathode. I'm sure it works with all alkali metals.
