Bought this camera a week ago, to replace our Olympus MJU? 700 that went kaput .... 1st thing I noticed, that I have not seen or heard mentioned in any reviews, this one included is that when in video mode you cannot ZOOM in and out, which seems a complete waste of time. Does anyone know if I can but need to set a program !! ???? Very annoyed as I used my MJU700 to take videos of my 14 month old son .....

I have been looking for F40fd and F50fd. I don't know which is better. Megapixels are same to me, but 8 megapixel files doesn't take so much space then 12 megapixel files. But noise reduction is better in F50 and their noise levels aren't not so different. I hope that F100fd is? complete differet class then F50 in photo qualty and buttons layout, becouse I have big hand and I don't want to hit wrong buttons all the time.

I agree - the F50fd is on a level playing field with most compacts these days? - I'd say none has the edge for low light work, although the Fuji can produce some natural-looking results with its flash for nearby subjects. Note Fuji has just announced the F100fd, coming in March...

I think the f31 was probably best compact camera released but of course Fuji had to go and stop making them to force you to buy the f50fd. Does anyone know whether the f50 or f40 is better for gigs in low? light for pictures and videos? Or even another camera?

I feel it's a bit deceptive to say this camera doesn't perform as well as the F30 at higher ISO settings. If you lower the resolution of the F50fd to 6mp. The noise? level is virtualy identical to the F30 at 800, 1600 & 3200 ISO.

It depends on how the F50fd 'bins' its? pixels. You may need to reduce the resolution a lot to see any measurable decrease in noise. I certainly wouldn't buy if you're counting on this...

Oh, by the way...will decreasing the f50's sensor from 12mp to 6 or 8 improve the noise at the higher ISO? Possibly this is a work around for the? redundancy of 12mp.

When I saw the f30d I tought it would be the standard from there on in terms of ISO quality. But I guess low noise is not as appealing to? the public as more megapixels, so, no more of that. It is sad, imagine how aweful will the image quality of compacts be in the near future.

Actually component does not support 720p. If your TV supports the .mov? (Quicktime) -format you can watch it off the card. Panasonic's own plasma TV does not! That's disappointing! I guess you can convert the video into a Bul-Ray format if you have such a player.

I just got the DMC-FX38 the other day and have bin havin a blast wit it,its got all the bells and whistles but have been now trying to get down to the nitty gritty with manual mode and messin round with settings, I realise that it is still justa compact camera, but I been snapping some nice and creative photos.will have to put up some video of it.this is my first lumix, it came highly recomended by most of the shops I looked at, what? with the feature set, aswell as the 25mm super wide leica lens

Bought the 850 Sw in june . Took it to Hawaii and loved it, dropped it, swam with it for long periods of time in the? ocean as well as pool. Jumped with it while filming and never let us down. Took over a thousand pics with it. My only complaint is wish it had a strap that would hold it tight to my wrist. It stayed in an open loop which I didnt like. thats about it. So, I think this seems like an ok review, but really it isn't. There is no real direction or comparison between cameras and between what people want to use the lens for. I? mean, why not mention what the next step up costs and what that does, and then I would click that video. This video fails. I am wondering if I should use my Sony reward points to buy this lens for $250, and I still don't know. This was the kit lens I got with my a350. Even after 4 years, and an upgrade (a580 now), its one of the 3 lenses most often used on my travels. I love how it fits in where the kit lens ends. It struggles somewhat with flare in brighter conditions, the hood only protects against so much. But I won't be getting the 70-300G anytime soon. As for those looking for the 75-300mm on Nikon/Canon, no it won't. You'll need? a dedicated Nikon/Cannon 300mm zoom for that.

I have one of these cameras, and the video does an excellent job of self adjusting but I have never found or tried to change the app while? recording. I will say the video has incredible low light ability for a still camera. Hope you find a good cam, this one has been around a while and I can only imagine what is available now.

Well, good question. if you want less FPS, a flippy screen and a user friendly guide then you go for the 60D. the 50D is just more professional. Although the 60D? has got movie functions, where the 50D doesnt. if you want to go for video recording, then you should head on for the 60D. But if you care for photography, then the 50D. Even though the 550D is a real choise, its a little bit cheaper and has got the same sensor as the 50D, 60D and the 7D.... i hope i could help :)

I must say, I have a LOT of respect for Olympus' UltraZoom series! After a C-760UZ and my current SP-510UZ, maybe a 550 is next? The only thing I miss is HD video, though the 640x480px quality? is very good. As he says, the build quality is great, I've subjected mine to knocks, drops, sea spray, snow, and takeaway coffees, and never any issues! The battery life on AA NiMHs is exceptional, I'm talking days, not hours! And if you wait for the run-out specials, they can cost half the RRP...

I dont know why that is.. I've got a theory that Japanese companies deliberately limit features on each product to keep? product lines in the same company from competing.. Casio did this with their musical keyboards, such that no keyboard has everything the others have so you are left purchasing every keyboard to get every feature.

Hi Rofthorax, there's only so much I can cover in a six minute video! The SP-550UZ has a good quality video mode, although you'll need a high speed xD card to capture more than 15 seconds at 640x480 / 30fps. The picture quality's good, but like most digital camera movie modes, the sound ain't great. There's full details about this and all? the other features in our review at the cameralabs website. Yes leica had been making LENSES for about 100 years but how can it be possible that they? make up a lens which ofcourse is the most expensive lens in the world and place it in a 200 - 500 pounds camera, which tends to be the price of the camera itself. Sony place their own lens in the camera's (many people say its Tamaron lens) and sale their camera's as Carl Zeiss. Taking pictures is the easiest thing as all the camera's do have shutter release button but taking good one's is hard =)

It is not a Leica lens.. Its just an advertising flare.. Lumix have got permission from Leica to place an their name on the top of the lens to raise? their sale, just like Carl zeiss of Sony. I have to confirm that i'm not a big fan of this camera. I just got back from a friend's wedding this weekend and I'm comparing all the pics i took (with this camera) and the pics my friends took. Bottom line, this camera looks cool and people were impressed with basically how it looked (the touch screen, the sleekness, etc.) However it takes AWFUL pictures. The quality is horrible. I would never recommend this camera. Most of the pics I take turn out? very blurry. Never will i buy a Sony again.

One thing he forgets to mention here is that Sony always delivers the highest? Dynamic Range (close to film) compared to any other brand on the market. With such high DR capability, free anti-shake for any lens attached, a huge 24MP full-frame sensor... this 3-year-old camera is still unbeatable.... Kudos to Sony.

Got A330 Not really a great camera, the manual mode gets really crappy sometimes, the auto works better in the dark without flash though the manual doesn't work as you want it to work, you have to get the shutterspeed way slower then you'd expect so it gets harder to take pictures when it is just a little dark, was going to take some model photos, but I needed? to get around 5 lamps to get a reasonable light, but it got really crappy anyways. A bit problem in the Live view. just alot of bullshit

Just think how much it? would cost to buy a high quality VR type Nikon or Canon lens with the FZ8's zoom range. IMO the noise issue with small sensors are way over-rated. When we used high speed B/W or color film we saw huge grain effects, & others raved about the grittiness of Kodak Tri-X 400. Steves-digicams have got great 'real world' type sample photos & the FZ8 photos look fine to me!

Pfft.. f2.8 is not interesting at all, primes are all about big aperture :) But interesting lens of course to have in a bag that normally? gets way too heavy with full lens kit. About your reviews, for some reason I feel you fill the frame too much. Maybe zoom out for a midshot of your body? Using an external mic would do wonders for the sound. Also, why not cut in shots of you holding equipment, from another angle... more interesting that way. Of course the photos help a lot too! Keep it up!

Hi, I have been using FZ50 for like 2 years, and now I'm thinking about switching to FZ100. One of the biggest cons is the image quality, which I didn't like on? my FZ50 and I think I'll hate it on FZ100. On the other hand, I love HD and highspeed videos that FZ100 can offer. Well, there's a little problem with the extreme 12 zoom. At 35mm, it shows noticable barrel distortion It looks like a picture taken with an extreme wide angle lens, when you actually were not standing that close to the subject. But, I guess these are the compromises we? have to make with those super-zoom lenses.

FZ50, no question about it. The FZ28 has? a cheesy button controlled electric zoom. The FZ50 has a nice smooth zoom you control with a confortable ring on the lens.

Fantastic review! I have the DMC-FZ30, and everything said in this review is true. This guy is the best camera reviewer I've ever seen. I think that Panasonic discontinued the FZ50, which is a shame. It was a very very good camera for the price. Oh oh... One little thing I have to disagree about the review. The dust or sand can actually get inside of this camera, as it isn't a pro grade weather sealed unit. If this happens, it's bad,? 'cause you won't be able to take the dust out of it

also. professionals have different needs to the regular consumer. that is why they are using primarily the Nikon/Canon/Fuji system for small format SLR use simply because they built what professionals actually need. olympus do make great cameras. and i do admit the in camera stabilizer can be handy. but out of my own experience (coming from film) i have never once needed IS? at anything lower than 200mm (in low light), alot of other working photogs would say similar things........

yes they add up to a few thousand pounds but think about it. those lenses can be mounted on multiple bodies in turn saving you money in the long run. and as my point earlier. if a new IS system is upgraded. and you so desperately need it. then you would? simply just sell the old lens (or trade it in) and get the upgrade. simple as that. no need for upgrading the complete body, if professionals truly needed built in IS the major companies would introduce it.

i do hand held exposures without the need for any stabilization whatso ever........ think about it this way. if IS was THAT important for most shooting sittuations. why don't professional medium format cameras have it? it's the same as to why they don't have live view and all? the other bullshit that's introduced in lower level cameras.... i shoot for a living and i find that in body IS is not neccessary..... only regular consumers need this crap

What if you want do do a handheld half second exposure on, say, a wide angle lens - that would be impossible on a system without stabilisation, but it is possible on a system with stabilisation built into the body. IS is not just for long focal lengths - it's very useful for? long exposures at wide focal lengths too.

uh... well you HAVE to change it on the lens with four thirds cameras right?? so you'll have to do the same on a canon. plus you're mounting a non native lens on a canon camera. there will be no way on earth you could change lenses via the body unless you completely overhaul the lens and change the electronics etc.

the whole "in body stabiization" marketing push is flawed.... think about it. Image stabilization is NOT needed if you're shooting anything wider than 50mm unless you're a coffee addict. lens stabilization is far better due to the fact that if a NEW IS system is? out. you simply upgrade the lens. no need to fork out thousands more on a new body, that is why the bigger companies have not moved to in body IS.

The difference is no more than half of a stop in noise. So on a nikon you can shoot 3200 and on an olympus about iso 2000. To me all shots made above iso800 are crap so i don't care for the iso hype.? All cameras loose detail in high iso even if they look clean.

That was a great camera body.? It's untortunate that Panasonic and Leica discontinued it. It was the only relatively affortable way of getting a camera with shutter speed dial as well as the aperture ting on the lens. In addition, the body offered live view, as well as non-electronic viewfinder view, just like the Olympus E-330. The porro prism was the design that really made a lot of sense for digital camera.

I believe it is a lens designed by Leica for Panasonic and manufactured under supervision by Panasonic in Japan. The thing to remember is a lens manufacturer, be it Leica or Zeiss, can be commissioned to produce optics at any price point,? so don't expect miracles just because of the name. That said, the FX30 is good.

Picture quality with one of these is really impressive. I just find one thing really hard to believe, do they actually place a (authorized) Leica lens on a camera which cost's not more then just 150-200 GBP. Because many sony owner's Claim that when you spend 200-300 pounds? on a camera you don't get a Carl-Zeiss lens, its a Sony lens with the tag on it.

I've got this camera since march 08. mine is silver though. quite satisfied with it. high megapixel, cool non-extending lens... can record? good lengthy vid depending on your memory card. (there're two of my videos that i've uploaded using this cam: "nenek joget" and "with or without you") one thing that i'm not satisfied is... it's battery life..
