Good test showing you the difference between the AWD systems, but a little impractical. Most people buy these cross-overs so they can carry family members or friends along for a ride (as well as their gear), in which case even the Subaru would be underpowered and fail to drive up the ramp. The standard 170 HP that the boxer engine provides is not enough,? and while Subaru offers an upgraded engine, it becomes too expensive for what its worth.

This video is bogus. The rear wheels aren't shown on purpose, so they can lie about the other vehicles (though they are telling the truth about the Subarus). The voice over keeps saying the other cars don't transmit power to the rear wheels. But they have added a steep step for the rear wheels to surmount before the car could move forward (you can see this when a car does move forward, it first? rises up in back). So the test does show that Subarus transmit more power to the rear, but that's it.

Ok, I believe Subarus have great AWD systems, but the only AWD cars I've ever owned were Volvos (whose AWD is not shown here). In? other videos on You Tube, Volvo is portray by Subaru partisans as totally useless. Not my experience! To see a good You Tube video on an XC90 AWD system see Osons 4X4 mag 'Volvo XC90 6 cylindres Sport'. The spelling is correct--he's French.

The forester is indeed AWD all the time, but on a normal driving surface, about 80 percent of the power is? coming from the front tires and about 20% from the rear tires. The thing is, it is always sensing the roads surface and "sending" power to the appropriate tires. In a subaru, power is always directed to the tire with the most grip.

I'm not so sure, I have a 1993 Legacy and when one wheel looses traction it transfers power around just fine, and it's much much less advanced than your Forester, open dif at the back and no ABS lol. In a recent snow storm I drove it? around with just 14" "all weather tires" and it was just fine. Also the difference is that Legacy has all that crazy VDC and stuff on it, that costs quite a lot, wouldn't be surprised if that Legacy had a 32k price tag at the time.

I had a '98 Forrester and a '02 Highlander AWD. The Subaru ran rings around the Toyota. I was thoroughly dissapointed with the Highlander's AWD in snow - it was horrible. My Subaru would go through anything. I got my Highlander stuck going on? a slight DOWNHILL in 8" of snow on an asphalt driveway - tires were new. I wish Subaru had made the Tribeca in '02 and that I had seen this. Toyota = never again!

Yes, but you forget the fact that they compare three cars that can't be compared. If you compare three cars.. either make sure they ALL have? ESP, or neither. 4WD is the only drive that gives a fixed-ratio split of the engine's output, which is 50%, to the front and rear wheels. Thats what gives 4WD cars the best traction balance on every side of the vehicle. If you want to get anywhere during the winter time, there is little choice: FWD. Always fun to watch beamers and mercs slow to a halt when there is a hint of snow on the road. AWD, in my experience, is overkill and kills gas mileage. Have not really encountered any situation where FWD could not cope just as well, except that time I drove a Volvo V50. That car was? beyond hopeless, even though it was 10 years newer than my Saab 9000 (the ultimate winter car).

I'm from Canada. I also lived in Britain for five years. RWD is why two inches of snow is a national emergency in the UK. On dry road, sure, RWD all the way. It's the obvious choice for drivers who are drivers. On ice and snow, I'll take FWD any day, though. When your arse is going sideways, the last thing you care about? is too much understeer. RWD corners sharper when all four tires have grip. FWD corners sharper when none of your tires have grip.

Try driving the locked diffs on pavement. If you want your car to dominate on low-friction surfaces, then weld your diffs, good luck with that on pavement. Subaru has spent a lot of time making sure their off-road awd? system still works great on pavement. Also, check your price points.

actualy a hydraulic drive would LACK any kind of clutch, or gears. so supposedly it would only have the loss of hydraulic pump, and hydraulic motor. if both are properly sized they preform around 90% efficient. not to mention it could with cariable geometry allways keep the engine load to optimum economy -or? performance-, same for engine revs. And probably it would be lighter than the bulky trany and clutch, and diffs. i do agree it would have its costs.

A hydraulic drive system may be a cool idea but I can think of many reasons why it is not used. *It would be horribly inefficient (The main reason why standard autos are less efficient than manuals is due to the torque converter, a fluid coupling that has fluid frictional losses) * It would be prone to leaks and a leak would seriously effect drivavbility * It would be a hanous system to bleed or perform? fluid changes * It would be expensive - Hydraulic stuff isnt cheap

Very useful experiment. I live in the Japan Alps up a far, far steeper slope than that ramp. I've used Subrau Turbo Foresters. You must, repeat must be on snow tyres. Temp can drop to -12C so plenty of snow, but the Subaru flies up the slope. Only had problems a couple of times. Ground clearance is also important. In? fact going down can also present problems. Sure you can drop the tyre pressure. You might want to try narrow tyres as today's wide tyres are largely a fashion item.

I can vouch that the Highlanders "AWD" system is practically useless? in the snow. My neighbors bought one after the dealer convinced them it was great in the snow with 4wd. We live at the bottom of a steep hill that curves twice on the way to the top. They got stuck in the snow. The front wheels spinning, the rears would sit their like bricks. Then for about 2 seconds the rear wheels would kick in and spin, it would go up the hill about 6 inches then they would stop again.

probably a manual override controll could be handy to overcome issues where the computer fails to achieve proper results. many forestry forwarders employ similar technology.that is? offroading for sure, tonns of load, and usualy deep mud. (i work in that industry, 30cm+ deep mud is considered normal condition.)My personal experience and other experience i know is allso that mechanical diffs, mechanical links with gears are just sources of problems for serious offroad.

in a hydraulic system there would be no gears to lock int he diff. infact, there would be no diff at all. distribution of engine power would be controlled with valves by the computer. it could offer things that no mechanical solution could. example would be setting wheels speed relative to eatch other depending on corner radius.(for race car) the other advantages would be self explaining at serious offroading. better? clearence to start at,and zero transition (dis)engaging of drive locking.

VW Tiguan's US price starts at 22k USD, and Subaru Forester's price starts at 20.5k USD. Aren't these two cars nearly? priced? I have a Tiguan and I have tested Forester before I bought my Tiguan. i have a 1998 ls400 that got stuck in snow when i was uhm uhm trying to have fun in the neighbourhood, because its rear wheel drive and front was in snow, it would not bulge. With out the TCS the car would spin one wheel, with the tcs there was a dramatic effect and this was? a open diff FR car. And i amazed to even get out. thats a 98 model.

Not sure where you live. Mitsubishi sold 4,736 TOTAL vehicles? in February 2012. Subaru sold 5,565 Foresters alone. The vast majority of Outlanders and Outlander Sports sold are not even AWD. They sell a lot of cheaper FWD versions as alternatives to other FWD compact SUVs.

Is it not stated that viscious coupling needs to have much more speed to activate? I mean thats what honda uses and mostly all manufactureses use to improve fuel econmy and have fwd cars. Subaru has a much more active center diff, may even be locked (though i do not know). If every manufacturer did that then every car would be as? good as the other. And also as i remember, newer cars have awd diff lock to lock center diff. Toyota rav4 and rx350 offer that diff lock.

that could only be true if the 4wd has a way to disengage when the brakes are applied. Otherwise both wheels are mechanically tied to the same engine, and each other. You slow down one wheel, you slow down both. There? are ways to accomplish independent braking, but I think they person was asking if that was considered when designing the system.

I wish they'd have used Subaru instead of Mitsubishi. I don't know a lot about Mitsubishi, but Subaru specializes in AWD and delivers a good amount of torque. Or they could have also used a GT-R Skyline, the motor is powerful and in the R34 there is an all-wheel steering system as well. I don't really know if the Evo is a good representative? of the AWD system, and it doesn't make sense to use a car from a less reputable brand.

its true on what was just mentioned.. the evo kinda failed due to restriction by technology.. it blocked its full potential.. you see how it skidded right off the track with its brakes locked... as for the supra..? i kno that rwd have little to no traction in rain.. but at the same time ,the supra had more power than the evo despite traction loss. as for the rx7 ,,the suspension isn't proper for the track as to the supra looks fine..you see the rx7 driver driving like he drunk lol..

dude they just recently started putting suspension work in their cars, i even read a review, and i believe top gear? second this (UK) that the gt500 had the worst suspension ever, and that the 150 less hp roush ate it up around the track. im not a fan of supporting half ass production cars, its your money, and the performance to dollar ratio is just ridiculous.

hey there, as a GM salesman I can tell you they do care. The problem you are referring is common? on early model Acadias and there has been a recall for it. Simply bring your vehicle into any GM dealer and they will fix it for free, Im in trenton ON and we have fixed a few. The drain plugs are to small for the sun roofs and need to be modified, its actually a simple fix.

best car ive ever owned was a 1998 MB 320E Wagon.? It did everything well. Weighing nearly 2 tons it could still corner like a sports car, accelerate like an animal, and you could practically load another car into the back. No car ever made me feel as safe as that vehicle. Surprisingly it wasn't even terrible on gas. Man I miss that car. Gave it up for cosmetic reasons, still drove awesome till I traded it in.

Subaru AWD is the best AWD, it is the most direct to the wheels and goes through the least amount of parts of any AWD system in the? powertrain.
