@cameralabs sorry I was a bit vague, I meant on the 7D. I seem to not be getting a very clean shot. It is quite grey and also noisy with this lens but great with the nifty 50. I have done loads of research (maybe too much ?) and have my picture settings good, I think. I'm shooting at 24fps with a shutter speed of 50 which was recommended for? that frame rate by various different people. Thanks for the quick response and help

Hey there, wondering if you have any tips? for shooting video with this lens. I seem to be getting alot of noise and not sure why. ISO is only at 200. I am yet to buy the polarizing filter for it but would still think that I can get alot better footage than I am as is. @FructusSum I think you're placing too much weight on the colour of the plastic. Believe me, there are some EF-S lenses with cheap-looking bodies which? will perform as well as a red-ringed L lens in terms of optics. Just look at the results pages of my lens reviews at cameralabs . com and you'll see. As for the 15-85mm is WILL outperform the 18-55mm in tersm of optics.

@FructusSum If your upgrading from a kits lens,? why stay in the same quitly group that does a lot of the same thing. ok if you have the 55 to 200 or the 18 to 55 but if your on the 18 to 135 better to go up to a gold ring or different brand like tamron or sigma. In my opinion,

6:58 "premiere lens not budget" its a silver ring lens! which is the cheapest lens that canon makes........ gold is mid range lens and red being top or premiere "L" lens. only red ring are premiere? lens. Silver is in the same group of lens as the Kits lens! what a good lens get the gold, 17 to 85 ef-s, The only reason this has a higher price is because it goes to 15mm with is harder to make but the glass is still the cheapest glass put in canon lens.

@lookatme4 Keep in mind that the 550d, 600d, 60d and 7d all use the same camera sensor and processor - so the quality and resolution of the photos you take is the same between those cameras. They can also? all use the same lenses. The difference between them is just things like body build quality and weight, speed of how many photos you can take per second in continuous mode, amount of photos taken before battery goes flat, and what video filming features are included, and stuff like that.

my brother got this for me about the time that it was released in China and looking at it now, the price is cut in half... Brother got it for 10 000 (EEK) or more (EEK is the currency of Estonia)... it's a nice camera. The videos you can make look good and? sound good. The built in mic worked better than i thought it would be :D Lot's of cameras and mp3 players have had the mic but alot of them haven't worked that well

Great review on Panasonic DMC-FZ35. The camera is impressive. The video is so correct about finding the best digital camera being subjective. There are websites that can help with finding a digital camera to? meet ones photography needs. The site that I have found to be helpful has been digital camera ratings dot net. The site divides the camera levels into beginner, amateur and professional level cameras.? It certainly helped me.

@telorinodelhoyoo So didn't watch this review all the way through then because if you watch at 6.53 onwards you will hear him say you can zoom while recording plus what camera do you think he was using for this review? because it is the Lumix FZ 35/FZ 38 and from 6.53 he is using? it to do the videoing and he is zooming in and out ;-) hope this helps you change your mind as it can zoom while recording.

@julzyin I think it was fine for 35mm film cameras, but is too long for a general-purpose lens on a cropped APS-C body. Remember, when you multiply it by 1.6x, you effectively lose any wide-angle coverage. It'd be okay? coupled with the 10-22 though.

Good video. I'm an entry level user but I've found that primes are actually a good alternative to zooms. While I kept the kit lens,? bought a 30mm Sigma, 50mm 1.8 Canon and that allows me to take portraits and landscape shoots. I would like to see your opinion, specially about getting primes instead.

@renenszilardo I think you mean the 55-250mm. If you do then yeah go for the 55-250mm lens. The 18-55mm and the 55-250mm lenses are a? pretty good combination. The 55-250 is pretty light so it shouldn't weigh you down at all and I think it takes better pictures than the 18-135. I actually have a Canon T3i and I also have the 55-250mm lens. It's a pretty good lens and I'm happy with it.

@IrishMagicNews I think the 18-135 is redundant if you're keeping the 17-85. Have one or the other (or the 15-85mm!). I'd go? for a telephoto zoom next if I were you, or an ultra wide. Or a macro. Depends how your current kit is restricting you.

Great review. Think I going to dump my Pentax K20D and go for this or LX5. The K20D's noise reduction and AF is getting on my tits, very poor, results would put you off photography. I like thge fratures available on the Panny for such a small camera.? Time to do some more research.

I had a panasonic DMC-FZ38 for 2 days, boy all plastic, pics terrible, video codecs AVCHD Lite which is a pain to work with in any editing sotware, Raw in adobe Photoshop CS4 plugin problems,? Zoom noise, Image noise, Little twinky sounds like a baby toy, How can this junk ever sell?. I am glas I got shot of it for the same price. Only bought it as a chuck about camera, Glad I have my Canon D5 and Pentax K20D, think I have been spoilt with these two!!

@BrandonKingVloggin There's Tamron/Sigma? 17-50 with F2.8 constant aperture and there's Canon 17-55 F2.8 with IS for cheaper. It is clearly a waste if you intend to use an ultrawide angle lens with F2.8 constant aperture as a general walk around lens on a crop body because there are cheaper and better alternatives. Unless you want to argue that extra 1mm worth the extra spending to you, then I am speechless.

@gustavobandeira1 10mm and 16mm is a great difference in focal length and angle of view. You must ask yourself, do you need the focal length at 10 to 16. If you do, then 10-22 is the only choice for crop cameras.? 16-35 2.8 is a plane waste of money on crop. With that money, why don't you sell the 7D and upgrade to 5D MK II + 17-40L ? You will get a much wider view. Or go for 17-55mm F2.8 IS, greater coverage, with IS, and cheaper.

@najibby? It isn't ideal because street photography is about people, candid and capturing the scene or the happening. This lens is too wide to emphasize on happening. It's too wide for people. It's better to go for 30mm~50mm fast prime. That way you can do street photography in day light AND night time.

I love my E510! it's as dependable as any camera could be and a worthy investment for those who need more than a snapsot camera with a limitless set of variables for the discerning photographer. It's been 10 months since I commented above and although I'm sure that I've changed, my Olympus is the same as the day I bought it. @alessandra4826 the 17-85 would seem to be a good fit for you, but the 18-135mm would be even better if you need a longer zoom reach. The 18-135mm is similar quality to the 18-55mm; if you want better quality, I'd go for the 15-85mm. If however being able to zoom closer is most important, why not complement (rather than replace) your 18-55mm with? the 55-250mm? Check out my Canon lens guide at cameralabs . com!

@supersabre69 Well, an L lens is a Professional-grade lens. Just look at the name? of the lens and see if the "mm" is a range (ex: 17-85mm). If so, it is a zoom lens. IS is Image Stabilization. It is highly recommended to decrease, or eradicate, blur in images. An L lens is VERY expensive, with the cheapest coming in at 443 pounds (used XE). Either way, both and L lens and a non-L lens will produce great results. You can get a kit lens of you desire.

hi gordon, i am thinking about getting this lens for my "static" aviation pics, i use the canon 550d (gripped), and i have the 100-400mm L is usm lens for my flying action shots, but i want something to capture static aircraft, so i can get the most sharpest, full of detail pics! Be warned. This lens has a serious design flaw. Eventually you are likely to experience a faulty Power Diaphragm unit. This renders the lens useless. It is expensive to fix unless you decide to have a go yourself. Which proves to be a pain in the backside. Canon should have recalled all of these lens. Instead they have replaced it? with the 15-85mm that is a far superior lens. So be careful.

Thanks for the video Gordon, which was a real eye opener. I? was actively considering buying the 24-105 lens for my cropped frame EOS 500D as I thought it would give me a wider angle and better quality image than my kit 18-55 mm lens, but I see that this is not the right choice with my camera. The camera is awesome.Well worth money.The very bad thing I found is the AA during winter or cold..well, they are good during 20+C conditions.I use rechargable,and 200-300picures I get normaly.Sometimes I keep them for months inside, and they work no problem.The VERY bad thing is during winter, or when it's cold,? I get like 5-10 pictures. You need to keep the batteries worm really, or they just don't work. I haven't used regular during cold,so I don't know about that, but rechargable-BAD in cold

I'm using Sanyo Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries and I'm happy with it. Duracell, Energizer ( rechargeable batteries ) didn't do? so well. This is good camera with a great price ( if you can still find it), but it's better to bay body + some other 18-55mm with larger lens and not the original with 52mm diameter. More light...

@laptop504 I don't think a 60D would even fit into the hands of? a 12 year old. A 60D is a mid range DSLR camera with a heavy price tag. It isn't a toy, and it isn't a good starting point for entry level photographers. If you're getting a 12-16 year old their first DSLR go for a 1100D.

great video. i just think that the weakness of this lens are more than the strength, because of the lack of USM and high distortion (compare to 17/15-85). The only strength is really just the zoom which i don't think it doesn't really matter if you have 18-21mp dlsr, you can still crop it and it still look amazing! anyway, it just what my experience told me. Nothing against the video or the product.? Depends what you want to shoot with this lens anyway. ;)

Because of this review I ordered this Lens last week, it arrived today and boy can I say I'm? impressed. My kit 18-55mm lens for my Canon 550d(Rebel Kiss x4 t2i) is now packed away and replaced by this beast. I tested aiming the camera vertically to see if the zoom would fall, It did not, though trying to zoom in while shooting up gives ALOT of resistance (almost to the point where you think you might break it!) Anyway, thumbs up for this review! Thanks guys!

HD cameras were not widely available then, and I was only able to afford a standard definition camera. This video was uploaded in PAL resolution, so should be available at 480p. It's a problem with YouTube that it's only showing 360p. If you look at my latest videos, they are all in HD.

@photolitherland You should learn how to use the camera first (picture profile). D200 is 10Mpix, D7000 is 16Mpix. So if you use kit lens, on D200 it's ok, but it will be "blah"? on D7000. Go and spend more money for a PRO lenses. D7000 with Nikkor 17-55/2.8 makes razer sharp images.

@MrKnnknn I know that this is a late comment, but (correct me if I'm wrong) any lens that runs on Nikon's 35mm cameras will work on their? DSLR variants. The even cooler thing is that legacy lenses will only be manual on Nikon's lower-end consumer-grade cameras, such as the D40-D3100. The Nikon D7000-D3x all have AF motors which are, I believe, compatible with Nikon's legacy lenses. I hope this helps, if you still want to be 100% certain you can always look it up or contact Nikon. the reason that the camera shake appears the same with both ON as with both OFF is because the lens is trying to counteract the shake? by directing the light to where IT THINKS the sensor is, but the sensor is actually moving to counteract the shake, so the light the lens redirected is no longer hitting it's intended target.

Now this is a review that I had been waiting for! If i had this camera and lens combination, which IS system uses less power? I would gladly forgo the benefits of stabilization of the viewfinder image if both systems have the same effectiveness but the sensor shift? IS used less battery power.

Glad to help! I believe Live View and Anti Shake can heat up the sensor over time, but the E-510 will shut them off if it's getting hot. I think there's mention of this in the manual.? I wouldn't worry, but I would suggest using the optical v/f for most of your shots.

I bought this camera over a week ago and i love it. i was taking great picture in 30min and this is the first slr i have ever used. it a great beginner slr camera. one thing that really turned me on to it was the live view. ive been used to it for years cause of my old compact camera. now one of the thing that I have recently read is that live view heats up the camera and heat is something that really effect the sensor cause more noise in your pictures. Is there? any truth to this?

I am upgrading my E-500 to either the new E-3 or the E-510, simply for LiveView.? There is simply no better way to manually focus critical pictures than on a larger LCD screen under magnification...small viewfinders just don't cut it. If you don't use manual focus, then perhaps you don't need LV...but I personally think LV is a great tool for critical focusing and perhaps macro.

The E-System does know which focal length it's using, but the sensor can still only move so far within the body regardless of the lens you attach. Whereas if stabilisation is? built into the lens, it can be tailored specifically for the focal length.

Im using the E-510 as well and i must say that the in body IS works very well especially in longer focal lengths.. You failed to see that E-system actually communicates with the body? so even with longer focal lengths, the in body IS compensates for that.. =)
