I lived in China for 3 years, during that time? I surfed the web with a VPN connection. It doesn't just allow access beyond the great firewall, but it also provides a secure connection. I know many Chinese people who also use it, or some proxy server... the government can't do anything about it unless they shut down the internet completely. Funny thing though, a girl got temporarily banned from QQ (kinda like MSN messenger) because I was telling her jokes about Mao and other political figures.
