Problem is wind and solar are so expensive and intermittent that just to make it somehow economically feasible, the government has to pump millions in subsidies. The "most green" baseload power source is Nuclear, and it has its drawbacks. The green fad NEVER focuses on the negatives of Wind and Solar, just that they are clean and somehow will solve the worlds problems. The more sensible choice is install scrubbers? on plants without them. But sensibility is not what green peps want.

If there was another energy source that could replace coal, it would already be in use,and the mining industry would have already been shut down. As a man who has worked in the coal industry for many years, I can say that YES the burning of coal can have its drawbacks. But, I can say that technology has made some major improvements on the environmental impact of it. Coal is being converted to fuel pellets which greatly reduce the amount of CO2 released during the burning. I worked in a coal lab for 4 years and have been working underground? as a coal miner for 2 years.

Im an enigineer and I have seen just about every type of mine you can imagine. I love my job and all the miners and men I work with are amazing people. Everytime I hear someone complain about the mines I ask them if they like to go home and have electricity because thats where most of use get out power from. oh hell ya, those union mines are fuckn great. The atmosphere isn't even bad down there. In fact sometimes it's damn? cold in the winter with those bigass fans blowing all that air in. In fact they just opened up a new portal in southern PA not to long ago. It's not even that backbreaking work like it used to be. I can think of a number of jobs that you'd bust your ass doing, but it's also not a job where you can laze around either. Your ass is expected to get the job done.

Thank you!! I had childhood Asthma and let me tell you it is NOT FUN! I could? not fully participate in phy ed class like the rest of the kids and it really bothered me. Any time I would play and run around with other kids, play a sport etc, I'd have to stop and use my inhaler. I was in the hospital several times and missed a whole lot of school because of it. that's a joke. nuclear power is a death sentence for the human race. if any nuclear nation goes through a war that? affects its home territory (which will inevitably happen) people will suffer catastrophic effects for generation after generation within tens of miles of nuclear power plants that are destroyed. not to mention nuclear ships that are sunk by enemy action. and not to mention actual nuclear war. chernobyl and fukushima are nothing compared to what will inevitably happen some day.

PBS, not sure if it's done elsewhere in the episode, but it would be good to inform the? public what "clean" actually implies--please explain it from all perspectives. Sulfur, mercury, and other elements from coal combustion (ratios vary depending on source of coal) can contribute to pollution as sulfuric acid and methylmercury in precipitation. I gather from enviro/industry talk "clean" implies a degree of efficiency by not having as much S or Hg, but it's almost a beguiling phrase.

Now as for how they'll get the dragline out of there. He'll continue mine forward, breaking through the rock and following the coal seam until the seam ends. At the end of this mine site, the contour of the ground changes and slopes downward. Basically the level? he's sitting at right now, is surface level at the other end of the job. He'll progress about a half mile more; by then he'll break through the other end and be out of the pit.

The purpose of doing this is so the machine will have more reach to dig the coal and also more dig power. At the end of the shift, a dozer will come down to open up the access road down to? the dragline (which is between the two spoil banks) for the service truck which gets covered up a bit from material falling off the drags bucket when he's swinging.

He gave them 4cents a ton or esle they would blow up your house and family. Here in Jellico, Tn. they blew up a coal temple edge of town killing 1 man passing by w/ horse drawn wagon in the 40's. My dad worked the cold mines in northwest Alabama. You gotta be brave to go down in those mines and work an 8 hour shift. He also went down into a 92 foot? deep well on a bucket with a friend holding the rope. He dipped the mud into the bucket and his friend pulled the bucket up and dumped it out. That left him down at the bottom of the well without anything. You really got to trust that friend.I asked him why he did all this and he said ," for my family"

Sounds like the current plant operators aren't? interested in meeting the new regulations that take effect, to keep the plant open. The customers & other interested parties should take over the plant by creating a not for profit coop. As rule a coops act in their members best interests, not in the interest of stock holders that may or may not buy power from the plant. Coops that operate plants affected by the rules will still be providing their member/customers with power.

I agree with XIHood below...it's no secret Wande has one of the? most distinguished voices in the business but reduce the auto tune and heavy instrumentals on his and Tiwa Sawage's songs...I don't know if its because both of their voices are just naturally very smooth and don't need a lot of "production fine-tuning", so to speak, but the end result is their voices are easily overpowered by the instrumentals. Just something to keep in mind. Good song though!!
