I think umpiring and spin-bowling standards (Warne,? Murali, Kumble) have improved in the past 20 years. That apart, the 70s and the 80s were better in all aspects. Great fast bowlers as you mentioned and batsmen who'd not just score centuries on flat-tracks. They had very good footwork and played percentage cricket. The sportsmanspirit was genuine and players used to play for the love of the game. That was before cricket was prostituted by Stanford, Lalit Modi and co.

Total rubbish. Let's list the fast bowlers that Gower faced during his career: Marshall, Holding, Croft, Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqar, Lillee, Thomson, Hadlee, Imran, Kapil Dev. Apart from Dale Steyn, I can't think of any other fast bowler in today's game that can be mentioned in the same breath. Today's bowlers bowl faster than Thomson, Holding,? Marshall, Waqar, Imran etc?? I think not.

@Veggervangtuze: Cricket is a sport that can only be enjoyed by people with a high IQ. People with IQs less than 80 are obviously not going to enjoy it, as they lack the intellectual capacity? to understand the nuances of the game. Personally I think such low IQ people should be hoarded into walled off towns, that are later liquidated resulting in the people being sent to establishments where they are forced to work hard or exterminated if they cannot work. That's just my opinion though.

Whoops. Physical stimulation? Cricket isn't the place to go, the professionals know that. Interaction? Most of one? team stays off the pitch. Goals and rules? Secondary to codes of sportsmanship and honour at some levels. Practical skills? Not really. Exercise? Inactivity is rife. You seem to be confusing exercise with fielding. At lot of it is about staying alert for prolonged periods of effective monotony, the like of which is not seen in international team sports. Maybe golf?

Many sports - yes there are others apart from football - do not have "goals" There is plenty of interaction, education etc. Second - you seem to be confusing spectators with players (larding? around getting pissed etc). It was the grandest shame that Dexter & Gooch fell out with him as badly as they did. His "false" shots here amuse me as they seem to be a heap more graceful than some of the 'stunning' shots played these days. I have heard on the radio and on the TV that this was worse than 1994. I wasn't around yet to see it, but if this was worse then back then, I just can't see that being true. It's a dance number seemingly not well? known by much of the public, probably 'cause it dares to remake the Astaire-Rogers ROBERTA- but it takes a different, more romantic staging of the gorgeous Jerome Kern number, and does magical things- like showing the set magically change to a starlit dance floor when the Champions first kiss and begin the adagio. And, of course, no words can describe the final whip-swings they execute which ends their fantasy. Lovely.
