Secondly, I wanted to share an observation & see if anyone else has noticed the same thing.? It may be dependent on my water chemistry, but when lathering w/ Van Der Hagen soaps the shaved stubble seems to cling less to the sides of the sink when draining. Mantic, I got my first DE shave today using a Merkur Vision 2000 this thing is big and heavy compared to my Mach 3 Power which Im looking to ditch. I got a few niks having my head (I shave bald) but Im sure with practice I will no longer cut myself. At first I did not like this soap, because it was not loading on my brush properly. Wetting the soap prior to loading the brush seems to help soften up the soap surface. I have used this with simpsons chubby 2 in best badger, and simpsons wee scott. Both brushes work good. Simpsons chubby gives more than ample cream. Wee scott is? just shy for 3 passes with me. I have tried tabac and trumpers coconut, and this is my favorite.

I found? that my boar hair brush worked best with this soap but like others have mentioned they can get a bit scratchy with prolonged use. can you recommend a badger brush that offers a good blend of stiffness and softness?

I have never had an issue with not getting Mitchell's wool fat to lather up. It is a excellent soap and it is my second choice of soaps, my first choice is Tabac? shaving soap, I think it is the best soap so far. I split using these two soaps during the week.

this really is one of the greatest soaps in the world just sublime... i live? in london the water is terrible so i use a water filter mine is an ro system boiled water in a kettle and use an old fashion mug. all the problems of these soaps stem from bad hard water. sort your water out and have the greatest shave ever.

Canned gel is really terrible in comparison. I didn't believe it either until I've compared and contrasted them both. I haven't gone hogwild like this guy has - I just use a brush and a bar of shaving soap and go crazy on it for a while, but it really is far and away better than a can of shaving cream (or gel). Far cheaper, too. I use about a 5$ bar of shaving? soap a year.

Thank you :) The herbal powders were so great to work with. One smelled very earthy and musky while the other smelled very fragrant and incense-like. The essential oil is amazing, perfect sandalwood and the fragrances used were great, too. Hope that helps with the smell-o-vision LOL! It's Indian sandalwood. It's sustainable sourced. But it isn't powdered. It's crushed. You'll have to grind it to make a powder. However if you are still making essential oil it would be perfect. It? smells amazing. I like the crushed vs the powder. That way I know it's 100% sandalwood. It's kept in hpde white packing jars to retain scent and I baby it by keeping it in a storage bin. I love it in muslin bath tea bags. You must be my twin we seem to adore the same things. Btw I have around 10 dif

I'm not really convinced. You can build up nice lather easily, that's for sure. I sliced a stick? up and use it in a bowl, just like you do. Arko also softens your stubble quite well. The problem I have with the Arko stick is, that there are soaps an creams out there, which lubricate better. At least that's what I experienced. Considering the price, it's really good though. I like the Arko shaving cream range more. Btw, I've had my best shaves with Arko cream and Tabac Original cream, so far

I had wound up trading some Rip-Its to some Turks in? Afghanistan in exchange for a half dozen sticks of Arko - this stuff lathers so well all you have to do is mention to it that there might possibly be a brush nearby. Lots of people don't care for the soapy smell, which seems to be deliberate lemon scent on top of simply a pure tallow soap smell, but I love it.

for the price though you can't beat that shave soap. $1.00 for a puck...can't beat it. it has good lather and good slip. Williams however I bought from my local? grocery store (wegmans) Williams is terrible smells just like Ivory soap and is super drying

I do your technique every time I shave and the results are great! The soap goes deeper into the brush providing a better lather. Also, when loading upside down I find that the soap doesn't run down the sides of the container because? it's going into the brush.

wrong; the "evolution" of shaving was to make it faster and easier for common people, = earn money, mass industry. Go to a master barber in Hollywood or LA, and they'll use a straight razor and take their time to give the BEST result one could get. Wonder why they wouldn't just use a mach3, lol? People had time to shave with skill in the old days, and there were master barbers everywhere. Every form? of evolution in society is not for the better, pollution is a good example.

i know of physicians and dermatologists who are quick to recommend traditional shave cream/soap over? gels. Mass market creams out of a pressurized can are another matter...gels out of a squeeze tube would be better than pressurized products.

I love all these videos on traditional shaving techniques, it's neat to see them re-lived again, however, advocating that they are? better than current shaving systems would be misleading! You can ask any dermatologist and they will tell you Shave Gel is much better for shaving than Shave Cream (aka soaps), the whole point of the evolution of shaving material and and tools is to get a better shave.

The best thing to use is Home made soap...most Amish stores or Mercantile shops sell it. Home made soap is better? because there is Glycerin in home made soap. Soap manufactures take the glycerin out of soap and use it for hair products personal lubricants and other things. That's why Store bought soap is so drying to the skin. In addition Home made soap and soap made at a manufacturing plant are both made the exact same way

a pure glycerin face soap would not be stable enough for use as a shaving soap alone. Glycerin-based shaving soaps have extra ingredients. However you can use a glycerin face soap as part of? a "superlather" (see my videos page)

I keep seeing these tutorial videos? on traditional shaving on YT, and I have to say that they all have one thing in common, TOO MUCH LATHER. You're face doesn't need that thick of a layer, if anything it's just a waste of lather. It's purely aesthetic, nothing else.

Hi Mantic, I took the plunge and bought a silvertip brush and Edwin Jagger shaving soap in a small travel style container. Problem is I can't work up a lather that seems to really provide lubrication. I swirl the damp brush about 5 seconds in the soap then continue in a mug with a small amount of water in it. Ideas? Also, the brush seems to irritate my face a bit. Will this go away with use? Used Gillette? gel in can before and I'm a little frustrated as the (gasp) gel feels better. Thx!

At 55 y.o. I've been there and done that, set it aside, and now I'm doing it again. And with advice from videos like this, and the ease of finding the? correct tools, I'll do it much better this time. Do you know of guys who shave their heads with a DE razor? I shave my head almost daily, and I really like it that way. I've been doing it all with a Trac II for quite awhile and that's been acceptable, but not great. Once I get the lather thing down, I'll just keep going. Thanks for the video!

I have a little cheap boar hair brush and I used a cream to shave, and here and there I get a decent first lather and then very very thin passes after that.? I'm pretty sure it's from the quality of the brush, and I find I can usually only get a good shave from using more soap and slowly working my way into a thick lather. I'm hoping to find a better brush to get better, more consistent shaves. :/

Thanks again for a great video. One question - I notice in this video, and also in the one where you review the new Coates shaving cream, you seem to press quite hard on the brush - the bristles are all splayed out. Does this not open up the breech and lead to runny lather? One interesting additional point: my new Simpson brush came with a note? that said not to press hard on the brush...

"Quick lather" with an Omega 11575 boar bristle brush and Mitchell's wool fat shave soap. 5 seconds loading time, ~ a minute or so face time (ya, I know I said 30 seconds in the video, but I was wrong) Could I have done a 2 or even 3 pass shave with this lather? Likely not, but hey, it was only a 5 second loading time!

I agree, building a perfect lather takes as long as it takes, no need to rush. This was a challenge put out by someone who didn't think a boar could build any sort of a nice lather without spending a huge amount of time on the puck. I made the vid to show a quick glimpse of what boar can do. I have brushes of all hair, and I love them. Each one has its own personality I have to remember in? order to get them to perform well. Yes, I have plans for a Williams lather vid as well ;)

why for the challenge? How come everyone wants to go so fast? for things like this? If you had spent an extra 5 minutes you would have gotten your perfect lather (note I said "your" lather heh). Just in response to hcoll, some people like drier lather, all about personal preference. Also, it is sad so many people think that badger is so much more superior to boar, horse or even synthetic. You should do more videos about products that people seem to "hate." :)

Come on! Stiff and hard stubble does NOT cut more easily! That's just hyped BS! The softer the stubble the easier? it cuts. What cuts easier? A heavy and thick beard of a 30 year old or a 13-year-old's thin stubble? Of course the latter. Anybody claiming the opposite is obviously a smart-ass. Water softens the stubble. So if stiff stubble shaves easier, then why even soak the beard in water? Show me one person who gets a close shave without any water or other lubricant. Warm butter=cuts easily.

Warm lather is all well and good but I have heard that shaving with cold water and lather is actually better because: a) It stiffens up the hairs making it easy to shave off and b) it constricts the blood vessels on our dace making it less sensitive to nicks and? therefore less likely for you to draw blood. I tried both and I do have a smaller rate of cutting with cold water. What do you think?

I would not try using shampoo as a shave cream, as they have been designed for totally different purposes. There are plenty of inexpensive soaps and creams you can use (Williams, Van der Hagen... in the US, Palmolive in the UK, Arko in Turkey, La toja in Spain...). Mixing lather with vaseline is not a good idea as well.? You can put a teaspoonful of GLYCERINE, for a slicker lather, there are people who do it but still, I don't really see the point, unless you had a really crappy soap.

A couple of months ago I bought a? Crock Pot Little Dipper dip warmer from Bed Bath and Beyond. I fill the dip warmer about 1/4th full of water, place my shave bowl (Thomas O'Brian dip bowl from Target; fits nicely) in the warmer and plug it in. It doesn't boil the water so it's brush friendly, and I get a nice warm-hot lather from it.

If you have a coffee cup with a soap cake in it, why not use a coffee cup warmer to heat up the whole thing? You could flip it on before you jump in the? shower and by the time you get out, the whole cup and soap cake would be warm and ready to lather up. I haven't tried this yet, but I think I'm going to.

Partially thanks to you, Mantic, I started wetshaving in January this year. Since then, I've been hunting for a shaving-scuttle. I finally found a nice ceramic antique example at a flea-market? for just $10. I don't have any cake-soap to dunk in the top, but I have used the bowl at the top to mix up my shaving-soap anyway. The holes are very handy in draining away excess water to stop the lather getting too wet and sloppy and it's created lather thicker and faster than before! Scuttles are great!

I don't think there is anything you can do about the hairs now. Hopefully the brush won't fall apart. The? hot lather machines work with a special liquid soap or can be modified to use traditional shave creams. They won't work with supermarket creams in a can.

I agree with some of the comments as far as it took? a long time and was a waste of soap cake. But I also think that your untitled to do it any way you like and take as long as you like. Shaving is an art not a routine. I have a suggestion for you, try turning the mug or lather bowl upside down and building lather this will keep moister and most of the build up in side the brush and build a deep lather in it. I have considered filming an update to this video,? as it should really only take 2-3 minutes to build an effective lather. Explaining how to do something on video adds quite a bit of time to the process. By the way, I wake up at 6am everyday, and report to work at 8am. Congrats on using the straight razor!! I have taken up straight shaving myself the last few months, and there certainly is a learning curve. I have a Boker King Cutter 5/8? round point, a Parker Shavette that uses 1/2 DE blades, and a Feather Artist Club. I also have a Dovo Stainless Shavette, and a 5/8 Razolution straight razor with granite looking scales on the way. WOOT!!

Thank you so much! I've gone back to using a straight razor, and I just got a soap and brush kit. I was doing it completely wrong, getting thin, watery lather with no body. I appreciate you making this video, and now I know how to get that lovely lather like? I get at the barber shop. Re-scenting VDH Deluxe with some Old Spice Aftershave seems the most popular choice. Simply give it 3-5 good shakes of? aftershave while it is in the melted state. Since the original smell of VDH is quite mild, it is easily overtaken with the Old Spice scent.
