im gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Merkurs are pretty good. Safety razors do last a while if you have a good one. Maybe the one you bought was not the best brand or it was a cheaper one. Plus? there are plenty of people that have the gillette fatboys and superspeed's from the 50's and 60's and they work great. You cant say that they only last 5 years

Thanks to you I was able to calibrate my new Merkur Long-Handle Progress. The procedure in this video was simple to do and now I have what, for me, is an adjustable razor that is more in line with its numerical scale. I like this razor so much that I? am thinking of picking up a short-handle model too--this is simply the best razor I've ever used; and far more comfortable than my Feather stainless steel, Jagger, and other Merkur razors. Thank you again for a well-presented and informative video.

I enjoy your informative videos. And I can relate to your 1950s' inserts--takes me to my childhood. I've tried many razors, including Feather's, which wasn't sufficiently aggressive for me. Same with Merkur's std. razors. I prefer Jagger's razors' blade angle. However, the Progress intrigues me. In your findings, would you say the blade angle changes as the settings are increased, or? is it solely the spacing between the blade and the comb? Thank you the entertaining and informative videos.

I still find the adjustables more aesthetically pleasing, but this rather hefty tool seems to do the job better. About the angle: I don't think the slighty different angle is? a real problem, because you hear the whiskers jump over the blade during shaving. If you're used to DE-shaving, you'll get the right angle really quick, imo. Overall, this seems to be a razor you get accustomed to really quick. Is the Progress still your favorite razor, or have you moved on?

Thanks for your advice.It worked out fine so far. My razor isn't exactly zeroed in. The lowest setting is right between +? and 1, and I'm not able to zero it in, like you suggested. A setting just below 2 worked fine for me. I think it was a surprisingly good shave. The slightly slippery handle wasn't a problem. Finish seems to be quite well, so I think it's worth the money.

You are very brave to use that on 6 for your? first shave. I really want to get one. I'm currently using the Merkur HD. is the cap on the Futur metal, or plastic? If I could make one suggestion? Aim for gradual hair reduction, not eliminating everything in one pass. Especially with an aggressive razor, relather before doing any more work on areas that you've already shaved. It will help reduce irritation and will give a better shave. Great video.

The Gillette Fatboy adjustable has an adjustment scale of gentle to less gentle. Not that aggressive of a razor. That's why it feels so different from the Futur. The Futur also does hot bend the blade as much as other razors, so you need to use less of an angle, a 30 degree angle that you normally use on other razors will cause the blade to scrape across your? face on the Futur.

I recently? bought a Merkur HD(34C) and it does seem like a well made item. Mine is non adjustable but the handle isn't smooth like the Merkur Futur. I agree these shavers are much more economical than using the multi blade cartridge razors.

I take a look at the Merkur Model 180 long handled safety razor. Though it is a "long" handle, it's not that long. Actually the regular or short handled razors are about 3" in length. They should call them short and this should be called normal...whatever. This handle is 3 7/8" in length. The razor can be ordered on Amazon

Only used it once so far, but I already like it a lot more? than those overpriced plastic face-scrapers. I like the heft it has to it - it feels solid, so I expect it to last. wow, I bought that exact setup at the same store and shaved for the first time a few hours ago, LOL It went good for me, got some? burn on the neck trying to get close, still rough and had issues getting enough lather but I think it should go better next time. I'm just glad I didn't have to make a trip to the emergancy room :)

If you can't shower (mirrors fog, etc.) - you can put on a coat of lather on your face (doesn't have to be well-made or well-moistened... just a dirty lather job), then you can wrap a hot and moist towel around your face for 4 minutes. This will moisten the hair and skin properly for shaving. Then dab off the shaving lather and re-lather your face well for shaving. This is the way old school barbers always did? it.

Whoa, how can you shave with that razor that quickly?! I tried my friend's Merkur once, it took me 20 minutes. This was the first time I used a professional razor (i.e. one that's not called Gilette) and It felt? like I needed a blood transfusion after that!!!

The same happens to me. I was surprised to see (and hear) that in most men the hair on the neck grows downwards as mine goes upwards everywhere, except in a little area under my adam's apple where the hair grows in all directions. The? problem is that for me shaving with the grain in the neck (that is, upwards) is a useless effort because I can't seem to get rid of almost any hair at all. I need to go downwards to get a decent shave, applying very very little pressure

Mine grows down in the middle under my chin, then sideways toward the ears on both sides. Maybe try cross shaving on the first pass then opposite direction kinda like an X? and see if that helps.

This may be? a random question, but does the hair on your neck grow upward or downward? Mine grows upward so I try shaving upward for my first pass but I keep getting terrible razor bumps on my neck from my DE. The rest of my face I don't have this issue with. Thanks!
