I couldn't find a preset either, so I made one up: 'Lay me down to sleep' (USR2:F06) performance for the background. Replace the drum part by hand, using the PDR:A06 Rock Stereo kit. Add the bass using PRE3:G05 (Dark Uni), manually, to match the bass drum beat. For the guitar lead, I used Pre2:H13 (Over the? Top), with INsEF on . As you can only have 3 INsEF effect on at once, I had to turn it off on one of the other parts. (drums, I think). Something like Bert's - sort of! ...

For me the MOX was a game changer. A Motif at a price I could manage! At the moment, I reckon it beats everything else in that price range, but not everyone likes the way Yamaha do things...... Not sure it's an ideal time to buy though. Musikmesse is in March, and? that's usually when the new models are announced......

@MrJohnSynth I use an old stereo hi fi amp at home.? The MOX is stereo, so that makes a difference! I also use headphones a lot, and record back to the computer. This video has a directly recorded stereo soundtrack. Don't do live gigs, so not sure what folk are using these days. Go for stereo if possible though.......

Thought I'd try a few bars of Barber's Adagio, direct from the score. Ended up recording the whole thing, using the string sounds on my Yamaha MOX 6 workstation. Not perfect - I'm only a beginner -but it has taught me a lot more about Barber's genius... and it seems the right piece for the 9/11 anniversary, somehow......

If you want the XS sound, it's good value (used XS6 is still slightly more expensive) - but the problem comes from the (in my opinion) artificial limitations Yamaha has once again put there in order to make it a "value workstation" - and I'm talking about the limited number of Insert FX and the 64 note polyphony. It's the same as it was with the predecessor, the MO. In 2012, it should be forbidden to? sell any new keyboard with a 64-note polyphony limit.

(cont) appears to be more solidly constructed, even though I think it's lighter. I thought I'd miss the sequencer on the Juno but I don't. The USB song player is cooler than I thought, and does a great job of playing Logic-generated MIDI files or? mp3s. The key action is preferable (not as sluggish) to the MOX, though the hinge-point makes both of them more difficult to play at the top of the keys versus the Motif Classic. What an awesome review of the kind of synth I want. £899 on Ebay UK for the MOX6. The same price as a Roland Juno Gi It seems a perfect upgrade for my Roland JX-305. Not that I would ever sell it. I totally agree, that it looks & sounds a good bang for the buck. I will definitely be doing more homework on this synth. Seems like a lovely and powerful synth for? getting inspired and working out ideas, but not necessarily ideal for live performance as the lack of aftertouch is a bit limiting. A shame that Yamaha (& competitors) puts AT in only the high-end products costing twice as much. These companies are sending price-sensitive buyers like me to controller keyboards + modules (software and hardware). In my case it also led me to the Novation Ultranova as a tradeoff I'm liking so far....

This is much more useful review than Tony's demo/review of the same keyboard for Full Compass, because this goes over the? features / specs / accessories and shows how the interface works. The MOX features are familiar from the old (1990s?) Yamaha PSR-500 I'm looking to replace. The ease of use would appear to have taken a step backward thanks to too much reliance on that LCD screen, but some of the computer integration looks useful.

I played XF8. I was confused. It costs much more then PC3. Pianos was like from another room. Muddy, not dynamic... Too much metalic components in sound. I checked only a few piano sounds and a few el. panos. None was even acceptable for me comparing to my PC3. Keyboard was also not very special. Quite shallow, light... Some time ago I played Phantom G8, and it was? much better from this point - I mean pianos and keyboard. I used S80, CL115, Motif7 and Korg, Roland before... PC3 is The King.

Workstations are meant to be an all-in-one production machine, which provide a wide palette of sounds and you can arrange music on the built-in sequencer. Some even include a way to record? audio. If you already have Logic Studio you don't really need a workstation. A very cheap MIDI controller that doesn't make sounds on its own, paired with a DAW is already a very powerful workstation, even more powerful than keyboard workstations which have limited memory space and a tiny display.
