It seems to me that in recent times, for whatever reason, the demand for excellence went by the wayside. Probably due to many causes- the disintigration of the family, standardized educational requirements, and the advent of technology- i.e.,? if mistakes are made in a preformance, no problem. The computer will correct them. If indeed there is a live preformance at all. I don't know, but it is frustrating. How many times I see videos on Youtube, and wishes for a return to earlier times!

Im 14 and i play in my Schools Jazz band (I play the lead guitar). I really love Jazz music as well as any other type of music out there (Rock, punk, Symphonic Metal, Blues, Jazz, Spanish, Classical, Techno, Rap/Hip-hop, and anything else). @80stvguyActually, this is accurate. Alexandra spent more time in England while growing up than in her native Germany. English was therefore her native language. Nicholas was very gifted in languages, Alix less so. Because her Russian was? so poor, N and A usually spoke English to each other in private as strange as that might seem. A, of course, had to speak Russian to most others. The kids were all educated in languages, but preferred Russian, especially Alexis.

Not the one in this video, it sounds fine. But I was at the one at CMU that ksyalxe was referring to, and it was ridiculously bad. I heard that Nicholas shot heroin before the concert, but I'm not sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised though, the way he played. I wish there was a video? of it somewhere.

He'll just do stuff like walk off the stage while someone else is soloing or just plays like 3 notes in 20 measures. He often demonstrates? his philosophies and it often comes across to the audience the wrong way. I'm sure he's a nice guy If you friends, but he kind of looks down at students wanting to learn, like we're too stupid to teach ourselves.

He's really arrogant and thinks he's above music. I've seen him at a bunch of jazz festivals and been to some of his clinics.? He never really plays at clinics or teaches music, he just talks about himself. I remember someone asked him "when do you know that you've made it?" and he said, "when you start making money."

I saw Nicholas Payton with Doc Cheatham at a birthday concert for Clark Terry at the Univ. of New Hampshire back? in the late 80s. Even as a youngster he exhibited the same verve and energy as demonstrated in this clip!

What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert? that can go up?

Just look at Trey Anastasio's face and body as they pan back 3 times between 1:25 and 2:10...he is? totally moved by Nick's playing and sound. In fact after this Trey asked Nick to play with him on a couple albums. Check it out. Two great musicians!

I played Viola ( second row ) with the Midland youth orchestra many years ago. I also played French horn and piano to a beginners standard. I tried to play the oboe but was told I had the wrong shaped lips. I was so disappointed. Anyway the oboe, in my humble opinion, has the most beautiful? tone of all the woodwind instruments. I could sit for hours listening to the oboe playing. My dog likes it too, he sits at my feet and stays so calm !!

God bless Putin for what he has done for Russia, but he cannot be Tsar. He does not? have the pedigree. In these times of nihilistic modernity, people believe they can do 'anything', even challenge God. Monarchy is based on continuity by the law of God; it's a birthright.
