I guess you people have never taken an art class? This is a cool illusion but it's one which artists must be aware of and make use of for accurate shading. The eye/brian causes us to judge the shade of something not just on what it looks like, but also by what shades are surrounding it. Net effect is? if there is a large amount of contrast, our brain will impose an artificial gradient.

It works because our brains emphasize on? drastic color changes and de-emphasize gradient changes. When? we compare the colors of the diamonds, all we see is that the bottom of the top diamond is darker than the top of the bottom diamond, ignoring the fact that the tops of both diamonds are actually the same color.

I hardly believe what this video is telling us. True, why should we be considered 'mental' just because of seeing something as it is. I saw hollow for the first few turns. If the transition point between the shades is covered, our eyes and brains can't process the difference between neighboring shades. @lanebaguss14 I drew it w/ pencil and then painted it on the back of a leftover piece of vinyl flooring. I mounted my video camera on a tripod and used its lcd screen to come up with dimensions for the cube.? It's anamorphic so that meant a lot of trial and error while drawing it (walking back and forth from the camera to the vinyl and making tons of adjustments until it looked like a perfect 3D cube from that viewing angle). It looks completely different in real life of course.
