Maybe? ted reminds her of her father and that is why she fell for him, because of her unresolved feelings for the death of her father. So when Ted left her it was almost as if she lost her father again. Which did not help her depression and alas she shoved her head in an oven.

And she's writes that Ted is almost like a replacement for her dad, trying to make up for it. does anyone know if the line in the penultimate stanza (where plath mentions "If I've killed one man, I've killed two-/the vampire who said he was you") is a? reference to ted hughes? apparently, when plath and hughes first met, it was at a party where a drunken plath bit hughes on the cheek, drawing blood-just thought that was interesting.

Anyway, I was commenting on this originally because I was studying Plath at University and I wasn't enjoying it. I made a slightly embittered 'Plath? is Crap' comment, it wasn't the most intelligent thing to say but I was frustrated at having to study a poet I didn't like. I'm going to leave it now haha, I guess if you like Plath then nothing I will say will ever change that, nor should it. So enjoy!

It's a fair interpretation, her adult themes, though, I don't think are childish. I don't think it's meant to insinuate a childish tone, I don't think that argument is founded in any logic. The fact that she is talking in a voice that has experienced her twenties already proves this. The 'Oo' sound is meant to be soothing in a way, but is juxtaposed by the violent/strange/semitic imagery that she? portrays. Of course she is the child of her father, that is obvious, but this is an adult voice.

Her repetition of rhyme and "oo" is supposed to be childish... Hence the poem name "Daddy" it's overall meant to be childish and the "Daddy daddy you bastard i'm through" sort of signifies her growing up and moving on (possibly to her suicide). Usually that means that you read it wrong, her voice makes it all the more honest,? and all the less fabricated. If you read a different version that because you are biased to the way words resound to you, but the truth is if you want to understand the poem and it's author to it's fullest, you have to learn to appreciate the way words resound to her as she wrote them and as she felt them.

Nobody, as far as I've ever known, shares your bad taste.? I've read many of her poems aloud, as have other admirers, and none have said he or she did it better than Plath. But men like him are never willing to accept their flaws. They? want to pretend their good, and they can be good, but in doing that they just cause further destruction. I dont doubt he loved her, but if he knew she was vulnerable, and knew her history (and the other partners vulnerability also) then he should have told her from the start he wasn't good from her. His selfish, stubborn nature killed poor Sylvia in the end. Any one vulnerable like she was cannot handle an unstable marriage.

I dont blame him fully as most would, even though his next partner also killed herself, but he made her condition much worse. I was with a man like Hughes, but luckily found the strength to get out before I did something foolish. Hughes is the type of man? I like to call a loner. Always searching for something they will never find, never settled, never content. A person as vulnerable as Sylvia needed someone stable and loyal. Hughes should have known he couldnt give her that.

I find myself in awe of women like Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf. Both extraordinary writers, with masses of talent, yet tortured in life. Their lives are very different, but the whole tortured writer thing is something I can relate to. Their gift is their curse. In the case of Sylvia though there? were things that didn't help. She could have lived in content for the rest of her life, just as I am doing, yet her relationship with Hughes did not help her at all!

That's a shame and a loss however I do understand why this type of death of a great talent could become a focal point of interest. She was not mentally ill ! She suffered from depression: there is an ocean of difference; even if she wasn't depressed, do you anyone else who? after having their life shattered into pieces would then smile and say "oh well, sh%t happens?" Ted was the centre of her life, and I suppose he thought she wouldn't kill herself, after having been left to struggle on her own with two kids whist being humiliated.... Ted you was wrong, and he was wrong to destroy the 'missing' journal. We all screw up tho.

No critic seems to have picked up on this however, which is puzzling to me, as she makes direct reference to Eliot in a number of these works - i.e. Eliot's "Where is there an end of it, the soundless wailing..." from The Dry Salvages compared to Plath's: "And there is no end, no end of it..." from? Gigolo. She seems to have been responding to her literary heroes in the last weeks of her life, being simultaneously part of a tradition and utterly alone.

It's an interpretation and partially metaphor for falling in love with a destructive personality because genius and sane don't always go together. Paltrow looked so much like Plath in certain scenes I had to remind myself that this was only an actress and not Sylvia Plath. And, yes, Paltrow did not go out of her way to sound like Plath, but it would have come off as contrived. In her later years, Plath's accent? was neither British, nore American, just powerful. And to those who actually want to know more about the woman, there's a multipart documentary on here with not only close friends, but also her mother.

Read a book called Giving Up: The Last Days of Sylvia Plath it is a short memoir by a FRIEND of hers- Jillian Becker. It makes her a PERSON- not just someone to study- or treasure b/c she took her life. So many know of her suicide- and know little about her actual? works. The film leaves out so much. The significance of Plath burning that one book. It was a book of Shakespeare that Hughes treasured. She paced the? floor for HOURS the night before she died. She planed on killing the kids- but changed her mind. She had an abortion. The film falls short in so VERY many ways. Of course, none of us knew Plath- don't know how she liked her toast- or how she spoke in a general conversation. People think they do- they dont.

In The Bell Jar's carse, however, the character of Esther Greenwood is obviously a version of Plath herself. The majority of the book is autobiographical except for a few exceptions. You can research this if you want. Like Esther in TBJ, Plath won a guest editor position w/ Mademoiselle magazine while attending college. Plath did live in NYC for a summer and was so disillusioned by her experiences? there that when she returned home she sunk into a great depression.

even the portrayal of plath in this movie is bizarre. the opening scene of the film is a line from "lady lazarus" and sets the movie up as if Plath herself is the character of lady lazarus. if anyone is really interested in this, i'd suggest reading georgiana banitas essay "the same identical woman: plath and the media" it's amazing. ps--i'm writing a thesis on this film which is why i'm super nerdy? over it :)

@MeinKleinTier The Bell Jar is not about Sylvia Plath at all, it'sa fictional novel with a character named Esther Greenwood. Of course the Plath character is different in the movie because it is portraying Plath not? the fictional character of Greenwood. There IS a huge difference between a character an author creates and the author him/herself.

The Feminists painted Hughes in a very poor light- Sylvia did provoke the affair through her volatile? behaviour, and in fact Hughes's family were always kind to Sylvia- I would recommend the biography to you.

Ted Hughes loved Sylvia and continued to do so for the rest of his life. If you look at her poetry you will see that in trying to find? her voice she felt she had to sever all those links that she felt ensnared her Ted was one of this links. It's more likely he destroyed the work in an feeble attempt to stave off the growing personality cult around her. She's such a confessional poet it's hard to imagine? she wasn't writting about her deep dissappointment in her marriage and Hughes. He played Lou reeds' Heroin-I turned to my friend and said that may be the most beautiful guitar I will ever hear.I was a young waitress next door a LP store he worked in--all frazzled and rushed I would be,then he would walk in all cool and lean and in his shades,and I was transported and calmed.He encouraged my aspirations and said to come to nyc sometime -he'd intro me around-I have that LP-So glad he is remembered.

I met Peter over at Harvey Pekar's (of American Splendor fame). We got together and played once but it didn't really gel. Last time I saw him was probably in '76 at a Peter and the Wolves gig at Peabody's in the flats. Someplace I've got a cassette tape of Peter playing this? song and a bunch of others on a gig that was given to me by some mutual friends circa 1975. Very sad that he died as young as he did. He was a real catalyst on the Cleveland rock scene.

Her accent isn't too bad. Let's put it this way....she was no Agnes Moorehead. Sylvia? was a writer, not a performer. She mentions in the interview she is an old fashioned American, obviously the English accent and manner of speaking is something she enthusiastically integrates with her own accent. Her voice is interesting though; I like her voice....the awkwardness of it. It's not easy on the ears, but it has a certain charm.
