Let not go that far....salary / rewards are good and motivational...but when money become the main purpose then we are not willing to work (some of us). Who has alot of money want freedom, because money give you power and financial security...tend to avoid building? stress from work because there is no further reward. This is not a general rule...if we gain "financial freedom" we can improve our performance if we like our job...even if this big change affect our performance for a short time.

Interesting concept, that of purpose-maximisation. In these years where we know that the universe is made out of cells and atoms and we know why things happen and we know that time WILL go on, people are asking themselves what is their purpose in this reality? Some find the answers within religion; to be rewarded after death, others instead try to make a difference in the world and do things that will benefit others in the future. At least, this is my? opinion on the matter.

I believe undeveloped are undeveloped because they haven't got grip on free trade and rule of law. Even China could do much better with some human rights and less corruption. It is the whole package - free trade and people. You cut one you cut both resulting in lesser prosperity. However there will always be some realms? poorer than others. Humanitarian aid makes often things worse in the long run and exporting democracy is not easy if even possible. Money represents sum of goods and services.

Yeah, the known Universe will end one day. Not sure what you mean by water. Resources are? finite, that's right. However invention of new ones is best done under capitalism. Once the oil gets too expensive, investment will go elsewhere - it already started. You can hassle it by gov regulation but can prove to be contra productive - we reduce use of fossil fuels too much and will be stuck with them for longer time.Free trade with fair play (gov oversight) aka capitalism is the best option we have

At first at 1:00 the test is described as "higher the performance, higher the pay" but at 1:40 talking about the same test it has flipped to total opposite "Higher the pay, higher the performance." Weird. I would also like to see the actual test records to know what it was really about. Though I totally agree with the conclusion that money is? a poor motivator in tasks that require creativity.

How was this test done exactly? They reward the high performance with most money, yet ones who got most money had the lowest? performance. That cant be technically possible. If you'd just said "higher stakes => more stress" "too much stress => bad performance" It wouldnt have been so suprising. In that light the conclusions are a bit radical. So is this video just misleading in purpose of manipulation? I have to dislike it due to that.

There is a trend of blaming the victims, I know. But at the same time the 'victims' should find a way to empower themselves in spite of circumstances beyond their control, and self defeatist thinking does them no good. What I really don´t like, is the guilt that this thought about positive thinking is spreading. This saying, that tells us to be happy and see opportunities all the time, where does it come from anyways? Is it a product of a cultural grounding thought, that we need to be productive and happy or else we do not get the best out of life? Why? A lot of the skepticism here is rather misplaced. I doubt any rational person would say thoughts directly influence reality. However, the way one perceives the world undeniably affects one's interaction with it, this includes actions an? individual might take, and where it would lead them. Organizational inertia, power and ambition, as well as a political environment? which permitted risk taking are all much larger factors. I had an epiphany similar to this a few years ago while traveling in Italy. While walking the streets in Florence, I kept seeing? banners that said, "Pace" (pronounced pah-che) meaning peace, in English. Reflecting on its meaning, I thought of the same word in the context of the English language. In English, "pace" refers to rhythm or some function of time. I then realized that an understanding of rhythm or "pace" is essential to an understanding of peace, and how to attain it in the world.

Ahhh, I see! I definitely agree with you here; however,? would you agree that it takes a bit of both (present action, future goalmaking; and while we're at it, understanding from past experience) to be a successful innovator? I wouldn't assign the label of innovator to be exclusive to either. I think a present-oriented person who learns to act for the future can be just as successful? of an innovator as a future-oriented person who capitalizes on the present.

(Just noticed I posted two versions of the same reply. >.< ) There's a difference, in my mind, between the (future-oriented) planner and the (present-oriented) innovator: The first sees? where the trend lines are pointing, plans accordingly, and carries out that plan; they're all about delayed gratification. The second sees the condition currently on the ground, and by responding cleverly to them, creates what then becomes the future; they have made their work and their play one.

Hm, I'll have to think about that more. I would think that many of the Big Names in science--and I thought the video alluded to that--are more future-oriented. In no? way would those who are future-oriented ride on the coattails? of those living in the present. Those who see into the future are innovators who create things never seen before--they just, as you mentioned, need a bit of that present-time recklessness and love for the moment.

But it goes both ways: it's true, if cliché, that innovation and entrepeneuership are the greatest engines of progress. But these are risky endeavors: mostly, they fail specracularly. Why thank you, though I think one could say more for "people like me" than that. Take the Big Names in science and the arts, for instance: Opened up whole new fields, changed the way we live, usually for the better. I don't think they did that as a means to some? future goal. Hell, most of them /couldn't even imagine/ where their work would lead. No, they /couldn't help/ making those leaps and bounds, it was their nature. i like that you acknowledge the difference between natural ability and learned ability. Yes some humans are born with a greater natural ease of use of their brain, legs, arms etc. athletes are born with something different. This also does nto mean that people cannot learn or train their body to be better, brain included, just as easily as a person can become less skilled with their body by either not using their mind correctly or? by getting too fat to run. Biological evolution apparently operated entirely sans Future (desire, aim, intent) until around the beginning of agriculture (or perhaps the "birth" of culture). I agree with you, prof. Whatever genetic element exists in regards to intelligence, assuming there is indeed one, is being quickly outstripped by the sheer amount of available information. Simple memory-stretching exercises can go a looong way towards increasing ability to retain valuable bits, and every bit retained can lead? to increased understanding and possibility for new revalation.

The value of a phonetic alphabet for translation between widely different? Re: Intelligence I too get upset at people's ideas? of 'intelligence' and 'genius'. It seems self-serving, sometimes with a whiff of eugenics. Its like an excuse for non achievement. 'Einstein was able to figure out all that because he was a genius' as if he was, biologically or otherwise, some sort of exception you need not try to match. Its one of the reasons why I can't really take a compliment. I feel like they're trying to put something on me or use me as an excuse for their own mentality.

I am not sure this experiment is valid. Here, you are given signs by an? institution (in which you are walking into). You are not making choice, the institution made it. This is a "trust" thing. Good experiment, but I think this is not gender conformity... rather it is conforming to rules.... if you put a sign on? one door that said "sneakers only" and "non-sneakers" on the doors instead, people would follow them just as easily.
