A Murray's era tin of Dunhill Light Flake. Golden and Lemon Virginia tobaccos pressed into neat flakes. Exquisite production. This tin was purchased at Davidoff's in New York in June of 2009. It was one of about 2 dozen they had left. I went back to get more and they were all gone! This tobacco is very similar to Rattray's Brown Clunee. A little less sweet than the Brown Clunee.

I remember trying this almost twenty years ago when Murray's made it. Not my cup? of tea but had an interesting grapefruit tin aroma. But, I do believe it was/is a cased virginia flake not a pure tobacco. I have tried two of the new Dubhill blends(not this one) and don't expect the same quality.

This can of tobacco is not the murray's version. It is the Orlik version. The tobacco in Murray's version was wrapped in a semi transparent wax paper. And also the warning strip? on the can was not yellow, it was white. Orlik started using the yellow strips after 2003, this can is from 2004 or later. Murray stopped producing dunhill in 1995

hello mate,,well plugs flakes and twist are not suitable tobacco to break in a pipe bydue to their soil and flake consistency which will leave many gap n empty spaces on the wall un covered by the produced carbon,,as for the air pocket method i dnt recommend using it? alot unless the pipe hv a proper cake in the heel or else the cake will b formed on upon the first 2/3 of the walls leaving the heel un protected cheers ahmad

I totally agree with most of your thoughts. Boswells Best and Christmas Cookie were diassapointments for me too, I fell for the hype and they let me down. I also liked the Apple, but it could use a little more Vanilla...blend in some Paradise to any three? of those blends to give some more "omph" and they are much better yet still mild smokes. If you like the Chocolate Cream, try Boswells No Bite Delight...it's heaven. It's great on its' own, or try blending it with the Chocolate Cream!

I had the? same problem with Christmas Cookie. At first I was very disappointed, but I found that you need to pack it very loosely to bring out the flavor. It is defanately still mild compared to berry cobbler and raspberry cream, but now I get a hint of vanilla with what I would describe as "doughy" undertones.

Great review, I had a simular experience. I ordered a bunch of aromatics and three english from Boswells but the aromatics all taste pretty much the same to me, not much? flavor, but the northwoods is great. Cheers!

Thanks James, yeah I thought it was crazy at first how much lighters with a life time warranty cost but I'm going to end up spending a lot more on crappy lighters at this rate so I'm going to get one of those Xikar lighters soon. Yeah I just scan the tin lids and touch them up with Photoshop, the Squadron Leader one was a bit of bugger though because the label was damaged from removing the warning labels so it required a? fair bit of playing around with but it turned out alright.

Thanks James, yeah as long as you don't get carried away by the hype and expect too much from it,? you should find Squadron Leader an excellent smoke. Yeah aromatics tend to be a bit of disappointment for me but although I don't like them anywhere near as much as English blends I do still enjoy exploring them as there is so much variation and there are some really good ones out there.

Thanks G, I think you're probably right about it being the burley in Roll Cake, I didn't come that conclusion myself as it's not quite that same flavour I have experienced in the few burley blends I've? tried but I suspect that is because those just use it very subtly.

Very nice video, Dan. I'm not a big fan of Uni. Flake either. The rough profile tobacco in MacB Roll Cake (which I never had) is probably burley. Black Mallory is great, one of my favorite englishes, although I haven't had it? for a long time. Cheers Gustavo

Thanks very much, well to be honest I don't really take much notice what the ash looks like, I hear that is supposed to signify a good quality tobacco but for me a good quality tobacco is determined by the taste and if burns without much problem. But yeah,? they all seem to leave a fairly fine, white ash, I would say Black Mallory is probably the best in that respect.

Yeah Squadron Leader is very popular on here, I can't imagine anyone into English blends wouldn't like it, some people might be disappointed with it due to the hype but as long as you don't expect too much from it, it's easy to see why it is so popular.?

Thanks Fidele. Well the unedited version is over 20 minutes, I had planned to include at least one more tobacco but fortunately I forgot about it. Yeah I too now prefer to go for the less popular blends, when a tobacco is over hyped it can spoil the experience as you can? expect too much then end up disappointed by it. Just because a blend is not as popular as say Squadron Leader that does not mean there aren't better blends out there, for me Black Mallory is a great example of that.

Flake, although it's not my kind of thing I think it is one of those tobaccos everyone should try, the plum like? flavour is very obvious to start with, then as you get further down the bowl the flavour fades away but I think this is due to your taste buds more than anything as I find if you take sip of a drink the flavour returns. It's certainly an interesting smoke.

Not all cigarette tobacco is loaded with nasty chemicals like manufactured cigarettes. Really the difference comes from the blend of tobaccos used. It's also cut differently. Rolling tobacco is cut in narrow ribbons or a more of a string consistency. Pipe tobacco has a wider ribbon cut. The black Cavendish pipe tobacco I have smoked has always been in small chunks or bits. Pipe tobacco is also stronger than cigarette tobacco. Not so good? for inhaling.

I just started pipe smoking a few months ago & before I'd even gotten my pipe in, I'd found a bunch of young pipe smokers on YouTube. Like you said, it was nice getting recommendations on which to try & which? to avoid. There are so many brands & blends out there it's overwhelming when you're just starting out. PipesAndCigars has also treated me quite well. I live on an island with no tobacco store & they offer affordable & quick shipping unlike other sites I first looked at.

If the tin has a good seal (rubber type like Mac Barens) I will leave it in the tin as I smoke the contents, but if not I will transfer it to a jar of some sort. I have read however that you should not leave tobacco in? tins in any event because they just don't seal well and it will dry out the tobacco. So I my program is a work in progress. I will transfer any tin tobacco to jars (usually small ones) if I am not going to smoke it for some times. Cheers, Kel

I bought some Captain Black tonight because it was on sale for almost nothing. I love the way it stays lit and burns cool, but I dislike the flavor and aroma. I cannot describe why. The information was very helpful but I personally found that the volume level of the jazz? that accompanied it often detracted from the video overall. I don't know if all of your videos are like this or if it was an oddity but lowering the volume of the jazz or bringing the microphone closer to you so we get a louder channel for that would help with your clarity. Once again, the video was fine, jazz music aside.

It's a good idea to skip the wiping-out step and let the rubbing alcohol evaporate with the jars inverted on a grate that allows air flow. It doesn't take long if you use 90% alcohol and it bypasses the possibility of? any contamination after the alcohol application. Take it easy! and sweet smoke :D

I have a question. You said that you wouldn't put the tobacco from the counter into the glass jar because it may have moisture and cause mold. Doesn't tobacco already have moisture inside of it that could cause mold. I think a safer method is to use a Weck jar (made in Germany) and fill the tobacco and then submerge the glass in water about 70-80 degrees Celsius and screw the lid on and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Is your? tobacco completely sealed after dipping it in wax???

I strongly believe you are wasting your time. Tobacco does not get spoiled and does not require any steps like that. I stoped smoking tobacco in 2002 and had three large plastic humidors for cigars full of tobacco about 1.5 pound each. I even forgot about it. In 2010 I found them and learned about cigarette tubes and machines. When I opened jars they were fresh like I bought them yesterday and even they were humid after 8 years. I smoke all and it was really? good. Just put in jars and seal them

As far as vacuum sealing bags, I use a Food Saver household Vacuum sealer. While you can smell the tobacco through the outside after sealing, it doesn't ruin the flavor or the tobacco in my opinion. I recently opened a bag that I sealed over 5 years ago. It not only kept the flavor, it had improved with time. The tobacco was still completely moist and smoked great! Can't speak for the commercially sealed bags, but the method I use has? stood the test of time. -OldToby.com
