How many years/seasons have you tested these 4 corn plots ? 5, 10, 20 ? I don't want to see a short term spike in production only to realize that the soil has lost? its fertility, ground water is polluted, the animals and birds that graze on the land are dying and over a 10 year cycle my production has declined after paying 8000 times the price.

I talk about India, not the US. "Eventually resistance to any trait will occur" - Thanks for that info - now PRINT it as a disclaimer? on the seed package. So I have to keep upgrading seed versions to "fight" every new pest. We have traditional seeds that are bio-diverse and have resisted these pests for millenia. Also thanks for the crop rotation advise, in India "Navdhanya" is 5000 years old. It was industrial agriculture that encouraged monocultures. Get over it - your "science" is obsolete.

I don't believe for a second that the majority of farmers in the southern US are abandoning BT cotton. Eventually resistance to any trait will occur. The biotech companies have to make sure to be one step in front of resistance. Bollgard II is available and in the next coming years Bollgard III will soon be available. Multiple modes of action on the pest in question. Now it is also up to the farm to be a? good steward of the land. Rotate crops and plant refuge strips so the pest can breed.

Most farmers in our area do all kinds of field trials comparing the latest corn hybrids against older varieties. I base my research on first hand yield data straight from the field. This spring I have personally planted 4 corn plots with upwards of 18 varieties. There are thousands of trials available every year in every country. Some of seed companies data but most are farmers plots or university data. I'm sure? the same thing is going on in India.

Firstly if the yields were so good, cotton farmers in my neighborhood would not be abandoning BT cotton. Secondly if you have read recent "peer reviewed" studies the bolworm is now resistant to BT, not to speak of other pests that attack cotton. True Bt is not the only reason for suicides - it is industrialized agriculture as a? whole and recently GM is a big part of it. BT cotton seeds cost 8000 times more than traditional seeds that are bio-diverse but unfortunately getting extinct.

I will show you bodies of dead farmers in India who have paid the price of your failed experiments in cotton. Indian cotton? was high quality organic before Monstanto began its terrorism. India has a number of climatic regions with rainfall varying from 400 cm/year along the west coast rain forests to 25 cm/year in the deserts of rajasthan. hence in such a country the number of crops required would have to? be in hundreds to thousands. just 1 or 2 varieties of rice or wheat cannot be grown everywhere in different climatic conditions.

Most of these lawsuits your claiming happening 10 - 15 years ago. The majority of Farmers realize about purchasing intellectual property. A few tried to steal and? got caught. They buy GM crops because it leads to yields and performance. Just google a graph on US average corn yields since 1994. Non of that has to do with organic farming. Where is this happening today? I could go and purchase dozens of varieties of soybeans which are non GMO. In our county this spring around 50% of the beans planted will be non GMO. These soys have nothing to do with Monsanto or potential lawsuits. Non of this wheat planted right now has anything to do with Monsanto. There are? plenty of convention corn varieties available.

Good ole' Monsanto In Hawaii they made GMO papayas when they were not? needed. Hawaiian papayas were some of the most expensive in the world. With them now being infected with GMO's they are the least expensive. Hard to sell them in Asia as they reject GMO food.

After getting more into the 'bio' marketing, aswell as possibilities of genenetic modification for 'good purposes' like golden rice, I found this video. It's very enlightening. While golden rice might be a good concept, the way it will be patented and made unavailable, maybe contaminating normal rice fields, suing farmers, destroying traditional rice, seems a far worse problem than? just a lack of Vitamin A! You made me look at the bigger picture of our food industries, thank you.

But to just criticize and not give? any alternative is not the right attitude. Also, it is unwise to stop the progress and reverse the process. Yes, it is true that the protagonists of the green revolution story did not take an integrated approach to the issues that they faced then.They may have left out many variables like sustainability and eco-balance out of their solution. But they were real people who faced a dangerous situation and acted to the best of their judgement.

pains of hunger and starvation before the green revolution and saw the difference? after the revolution. Just because you belong to the third world does not give you unfettered freedom to peddle any unsubstantiated views as truth. Yes, sustainability and eco unfriendliness are issues with this kind of farming. But that is the next step as how to bring genetic engg and eco-sensitivity together. Geneticists should take up that challenge and Iam sure they will one day crack the issue.

What she says is very true! Again we need to deregulate THE WHOLE MARKET and stop allowing government to setup agencies that tell us what is and is not good for us. We are more than capable of deciding ourselves! Without those agencies providing cover for these companies, it would just be a matter of taking them to court for damages. The other movement that needs to be started is in order to? increase people power start demanding the right to call referendums on issues that are important to us!

Right now, the US bureaucracy is being used to try to force small farmers out of business. Google "FARMING WITHOUT A LICENSE IS A CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE" for just one present outrageous case. I remember several decades ago being told by Palestinians that they were required to? have permits to grow vegetables, and then the permits were never given, or given late.
