That's very untrue. If your talking about ONLY brand new from Miller/Lincoln then fine. But there's still many great old SA-200's and lots of Miller's out there, many in fixable condition for less than a 1K. Is Harbor Freight? crap? Well yes, but for someone making just a few projects like this or a simple farm repair it's fine. You get a welder based on the job you need. You don't need a brand new 5K Miller for a backyard weekend welder, and don't need a $150 HF buzz box to weld skyscrapers.

When you get into the pipefitters they put you into a 5 year apprentice program where they teach you how to weld. You have to complete 320 hours of welding in 3 years, which is done on your free time. If you have? certifications in welding before you get into the union, they might let you weld. Otherwise they put you to work soldering/brazing copper pipes.

go to Australia.. experienced pipefitters or any trademan for that matter pull around $4k-5k/84hr week. gets pretty extreme with the heat and humidity in the wet season but dry season (april - october) is really nice conditions to be working. get your certs and do some safety stuff also.. elevated work platform or confined spaces are good to have. if you are under 30 and from europe or US/canada you can work in australia for 2 years on a working holdiday visa.?

Nice video Donyboy, I just bought the 180c off of Craigslist for 6 bills, the guy only used it a couple of hours if that, it looks brand new, not one mark on it with the cart... I will be running it off a 6k watt generator doing mobil repair and custom handrails. After watching you run your machine, I am impressed with the performance, I'm waiting for some 10 gauge wire and a plug off of fleabay? to make a pigtail to run off the gen set. I can hardly wait to weld. And again, very nice video!

@donyboy73 I've read regarding the dial meanings the letters are meaningless, it's just so you can write down the welder settings if you need to change them you can use the letters to change the settings back, the dial is different on different MIG? machines but the letters don't actually mean anything. I also read (I don't use MIG much, so I can't say from experience) that it's reccomended to have the 2 dials in a similar position.

Expensive welder, but I like the? features you showed us on it. Seems like it would be well worth the money. With my cheap harbor freight model Mig Welder I always had to guess what settings to use, Lincoln really did their homework on this model.

Thought I got a great price with my Marquette MIG for $160. It is made in Italy and uses copper windings, but there? was no gas solenoid, just a valve you pushed in when pulling the trigger. Ended up adapting one for it. So nice to finally have mig, after being stuck with a garbage 70A stick welder. Hate flux-core. End up burning myself.

Hope you got it all figured out by now.. those little weld pak 100's are the hottest 110 flux core migs i've ever used. they? do a great job. using argon would make it alot easier.... flux core mig welding is a bit more difficult than argon mig welding. Dont know about most people But i like to push the stinger as much as I can rather than pulling or going straight in... makes the puddle wide and stacks it very nice..... Just keep at it and you'll be laying the prettiest stack of dimes around

Old cordless powertools are everywhere. I often see them at yard sales selling for just a few dollars. It is incredibly easy to revive the old Ni-Cd batteries just using a DC welder. I refresh my old Nikita driver batteries in just a few minutes. Do not try this with other battery chemistries.

All I can say is thank you so much for this video, I was just about to buy 3 new batteries for my 18v Makita and the best deal I? could find on the net was about $192. If I was in the same town as you I would buy you a beer right now!. I went? to the garage got out my battery charger set it to boast, zap the 3 batteries and bang 2 worked again from stone dead they didn't even need to charge. When zapping a battery it will reduce its battery life. But just give it a sudden boost for a short while. If you do a full discarge it is good to reduce all cells? to 0.0v by shorting all cells with resistors. This basicaly gets all cell voltages down and stops other cells overcharging and discharging. If the cells have different voltages then it can imbalance the cells,

The welder is crazy and increases the danger of or likelyhood of blowing it tremendously and you should wear a face shield. I prefer a good DC power supply,? constant current regulation and you can push the cells one cell at a time (the only accurate way and yes disassembly). individual cell rejuv run the voltage up slowly to see where the current runs will tell you the condition of the battery overall. then increase current until battery is getting warm. -continued-

I wouldn't get too excited about becoming a welder, when I was young I thought it would be a great job but now 24 years later I realize it's just a job like any other, I have worked union and non union and most on both sides were good guys to work with and these days $30 to $40 an hour is not that? much when you figure what it costs to live these days I have buddies that get $70.00 an hour to weld gas pipe but that work doesn't last very long. It's all who you know on both sides.

@lukemullinahone yes it can shock you, if your gloves are wet, but usually only for the initial arc then the current passes through the metal instead of you. I speak from experience. Long hot days of sweat soaked gloves and getting a little? jolt when I had to hold a piece to tack or having my knees on the metal while it's raining.

How? many amps is your outlet ? The only way to get good results is to use a 20 amp outlet with a 20 amp breaker, When I weld with flux core I buy the lincoln 30 wire that is available thru lowes, Make sure when you buy wire that its sealed up good because flux core wire will go bad. Also use .30 wire I have used .35 and the machine sucks at welding because it tends to be to thick even though it says you can use .35

@TheToolReview yes. It's pretty nice, but has a lot of splatter. I'll change my techniques since I'm not used to flux core. Oh and by the way, I put in DC polarity? flux core wire in it, and their was no slag and it welded like shit. I'm thinking it's an AC

Dc - is for flux core dc + is for wire with gas. I have the same welder got it at a garage sale 20 bucks still had the orig wire with it. I know the orig wire that come? with it is junk lots of videos say so and I agree . I got some Hobart wire and it made a world of difference . I was told by the seller it would not weld very good even after changing the wire I got it home and it was set for dc + changed it to - and it made a world of difference.

I had a dead microwave oven transformer so i sawed off the secondary and replaced it with 2 turns of very thick wire. I then made a simple yet very effective spot welder.

Thanks! Yeah, I certainly could have gotten away with drilling/tapping only the tubing, and had the wall of the tubing been a little thicker, then I would have done just that. However, I knew that this unit was going to be subject? to a lot of vibration, so I wanted it strong. Also, with the added weight of 50 ft of #4 welding cable and reel on the front tongue, the strength of the 1/4-20 full thread contact was welcomed.

I built my? on board welder and it only cost me about $85 and i can throw a bead on 1/4 inch steel if i want too. the wrecking yard is a tinkers best friend i got the 140 amp large case ford alt for 30 bucks and custom cables set me back another $50 and then 5 for misc connectors etc... for the bracket i reused the smog pump bracket. i already had the choke cable. the dollar amount for total cost is very mod-able depending on what you already have around the shop.........

that's not my point at all if you just watch the f*cking video again you he is not welding those HUGE train cars but just a piece of metal so if you would talk about those train cars at the first place you may have goten thumps up!! ps 1000v is nowhere allowed in the welding industry pps thay have spesial welding transformers for that HUGE work and they pre heat the metal to? about 100 degrees c to do that welding ppps they also don't always do that with arc welding method. now multiply that by 4500 ppl working in 3 very large 4 or 5 football field size buildings using the same... these train cars are 40 to 85 tons, we dont got time for slow welding. 30 foot pass in 120 seconds and on to the next or the car bind you gets halted and the line backs up... bad for your crew. Yes I know lower would work. but it isn't going to get four inches penetration? into a 6" beam... anything less then 5" = fail :-(

and if you would have a power suply with 1000v and 20a you could weld 11cm of steel but if you want to get such a voltege at that amp rate you need one big ass powersuply a big ass transformer cuz? if you want 1000v and if you have a 500 v suply ready with a max amp of 50 you could make it but you need a hell of a lot windings to prevent heat and if you need 1000v with only 10a you still need 500v with 20a minimum!! sorry for the bad english i'm a dutch electrician. reply if you think.

meh it depends how you transformers are build if you have 200 wp (wp=winding primairi) at 230v and it drawns about 5a and on the? secondary you would have 15 windings than basic math shows you would have 30.59 volts and 66.5 amps suply believe me thats enough to weld 5mm of steel if you put two in parralel you would still have 30.59 v and you would have 133 a if you put them in series you would have 61.18 v but still 66.5 a next comment tells more

Huge arc huh, I woulda figured you'd ask how many amps its set too, since ya know its not the voltage that really matters, Voltage times amperage =wattage so 100 volts at 1 amp is basically the same as 50 volts at 2 amps. the only difference being the HEAT generated through the arc. 1000? volts at 3 amps = push a rod through 4 iches of steel. works quick

ya, we never touched any settings, all the welder's were suspended 16 feet in the air on poles (was line work) so noone had to move anything while a? crane drops a grain car or steel roll carrier car onto our lines, all cutting with air grinders instead of the plasma cutting units right behind us :-\ why I left. ya I could use a tiny welder to replace my soldering gun, I cant solder worth a crap.. maybe I'll tac weld the solar cells I'm getting to make a panel lol

why do you recommend the metal housing vs the wood, fire? If the wood is isolated, what is to cause a fire, just heat from the MOT? I doubt for quick jobs and the lid open that is going to be an ongoing problem. ? The fan inside should help keep the heat down as well.

That is a proper face mask! I have an automatic helmet one and its wonderful in many situations. I just decided to show the old hand held is absolutely fine for small/DIY welding jobs, and no I have never suffered burning when using one. You don't have to buy expensive? kit. I set the welder hotter than normal to get more heat onto the stud, the heat helps free any rust etc, its not just a case of welding on a nut to get a grip on. This works well, particularly in confined spaces.

Wow, that's me! I had no idea this would end up on You Tube, let alone with so many hits. The original when posted on Expert Village was accompanied by some text that gave a little more information. I was asked by a student friend of my son if he could film me welding for a project he was doing. In tricky locations I have used? a copper washer placed (even glued first) over the hole to protect the aperture. Then weld the nut, or even a piece of flat steel bar with a suitable hole drilled in it.

All you have to worry about is if the shaft is further inside is that you dont arc off of the threads. you have to use stick to do this process. because the flux like what was posted from someone else. mig can be used to extract it if its flush because? mig has slag but not enough to protect the threads. Yes it does contract but when it cools down it constricts to less than 1/72 of the size. Mig welds when you push a button, stick welds when you make contact so becareful you only touch the shaft

yes aluminum has a higher thermal heat conductivity which means that heat travels faster through aluminum. but since this process is so fast it shouldn't travel fast enough to damage any internal parts like cast iron crome or machined parts. one thing that i would mention though is that if this doesn't work you would have to use a helicoil and helicoils are aluminum. no problem? installing helicoils in a cast but when you install them in aluminum those threads are really fragile.

yes its ok just remember to give it enough time to cool down before torquing down on that bolt, so you don't strip those threads? the block will cool faster than the bolt. You could also use a stick but its a little trickier vs mig, because you don't want to make contact with the nut before the broken bolt shaft. Mig sets it to weld when you push a button, stick is active once you touch it. Also the nut has to be large enough for the stick to fit inside the hole of the nut.

if its aluminum you use an aluminum mig or you can use tig. If your not that fortunate. You can also buy aluminum rods for your stick welder. The only thing you have to worry about with using stick to do the same process is that the nut hole has to be large enough to fit the rod through to arc off of the bolt shaft? that's broken. You have the basic idea, but not the best method. First? weld a washer onto the stud, then weld a nut onto the washer. Once that's done work the nut back and forth a few times to help clean out the threads before removing the stud. This system works more times than your way. Yes, its a couple more steps, but works better than you system and there is less chance of destroying the threads.

Ok well good luck with that, if you tell me the material specification and the diameter I'll recommend the rotational speed and axial trust load you should be aiming for. I think you will struggle with steel as the required weld intensities are much greater than that of aluminium. I have a few recommendations; your chances of success would be greatly increased? if you used tube to tube weld geometry as long as your TIR is acceptable. There are others but I only have 500 characters.....

Friction welding steel is not a problem providing that the? parent material does not contain high levels of sulphur or lead that can have a lubricating property in the weld interface when heat is induced between the masticating surfaces. In some steels and with the correct applied parameters the resulting weld will be stronger than the material itself.

Its good for simple exhaust work like welding pipes together, fixing furniture and bicycles, but would not use it on car frames or stuff that is major load bearing like frames for buildings. I got the newer one, i am having fun learning to weld with? it, I think it needs a better flux wire because even as my welds improve the splatter is terrible I have herd the flux wire that comes with it sucks and the splatter is because the wire is low quality and doesnt mix well with the metal your welding

that's why you utilize the compressor clutch,? energized by the pressure relief/regulator valve, it'll kick on when you need it, and free spin when you don't. Do your homework, and use the grey matter between your ears once in a while. and about value retention, I sold a vehicle 2? years ago with a custom York OBA setup, the guy willingly paid me $500 just to keep it in the truck, I paid $150 for everything needed...... I've already built another one to install in my ZR2 after it's 4bt swap.

I quit listening when he said his good tools were craftsman.... Go buy some real good tools, like S-K, K-D, MAC, Easco, Snap-On, or Proto. Craftsman are junk, in my experience. Yes? they have a lifetime warranty, but the since time is money, the time you spend to go replace the broken tool is better spent buying good quality tools to start with.

did the early jeep's PTO have the option to run a backhoe? Like my comment said, search santana land rover and you will be blown away; (by the many different PTO attachments? they had available, from firetruck units to backhoe units to heavy welding units, the list does go on). (not just the normal tractor PTO stuff)

Also is your air compressor like the York air compressor, where the oil is separate from the actual piston, or is yours lubricated like a normal a/c compressor?
