You aren´t wrong saying there´re still great bands out there. However, most of them I think they are because of their technicality. I may be wrong, but at least a lot of guitarist today seem to come out from a school of technical? players. Music from the seventies was more independant, each player sounded as himself. But we can all enjoy good creations yet and that´s promising and faithful. :)

Rick Wakeman is one of my heroes and so is Bach, who claimed to have been inspired by religion but then so did every other composer of his era - he simply followed the prevailing Zeitgeist of his times. Progressive *can* be like Death, have a listen to Opeth, probably the? best Progressive Metal band of our times.

Procul Harem were all up front and it don't know if ELP would appreciate them. I know this because I play the keyboards. Get the best of compilation. The organ and piano aren't just back ground with procul Harem as? it wasn't just cool special effects, but a guitar player (Robin Trower) and drummer skilled enough who could make room for the piano and organ. Notice how busy those piano and organs bits are in the music? A lot of effort was put into creating their songs.

When the group melds together to become greater than the sum of its individual parts, then one has something special going on. I think the progressve rock age kind of did themselves in. Because of the Beatles, all these groups were allowed into the recording studios where they tried impressing each other. They were all cocky as hell. In the end, I think they blew each other away as many monumental, albeit over produced, albums came out during the early seventies. Then the record companies took? blondes, called them sluts, and prettied up their voices with a lot of reverb.

Oh, come on now, it doesn't really matter how many members that? your group has, but rather how they actually work together as a group, and these musicians play together much better than most 5 peice groups. And although kerry minnear was certainly no slouch on keys, emerson was simply the best. No one had his style & technical skill and be able to play as many different things in as many different styles as he could.

I remember seeing these guys like 20 years ago, and what do I remember most? Well, Lake whining some electronic device between his legs to make some god awful racket (but? it was great!), then he threw his keyboard off the stage and jumped on it smashing the hell out of it. And I don't mean some small piano but a big mother. Finally, after every song some guy yelling over and over again "Endless Enigma! Endless Enigma!" I'm just glad they didn't wait to long to play it. lol

The sum? of the parts (the group) should supersede the whole of each individual. It is one thing to have a collection of geniuses. But the early seventies was a proliferation of many geniuses. I'm just claiming ELP was lacking a few of them. I can't see how you can argue the point. There was too much arrogance going on in ELP for them to amount to much. It's sort of Keith Emerson and the NICE played a little different.

I've been to *hundreds of concerts as a fan of live music and particularly a fan of prog music and other non mainstream genres. You will have to trust me when I say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING COMPARES TO THE UNIQUE ATMOSPHERES GENESIS CREATED LIVE!! Genesis were *specialists in creating their own Alchemy, AND noted for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It isn't incomparable. I can think of a few things? (Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and The Doors), but I cannot agree more with your description of Gabriel era Genesis. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is such a stupendous album. All of these guys are bustling with talent and creative energy. And Steve Hackett is a superb guitarist. They make a really great ensemble.

v.h.1 classic has a show called metal evolution...in which progressive metal was the last show of the series....steve hackett was on the 1st? 10 minutes putting to rest on who invented tapping on the guitar...by showing a concert video back in 1971 clearly showing him doing it ..then explains why he does it...genesis's name fit's as they always wanted to be the first to try something new..they had part to do with the invention of the multi lights..they never argue about money,just music,f..awes

There is nothing "crappy" about Chester or Daryl. Its certainly not their fault that Genesis and PG parted ways, and its not their fault that the remaining members pursued a more commercial sound in their later years. I saw Daryl on tour with Jon Luc Ponty shortly before? his Genesis gig began - he is a phenomenal guitarist. As for Chester - he's Zappa-tested-and-approved - there is no higher authority (even his Weather Report gig doesn't compare(!)). Collins chose a worthy peer.
