Mantic, I got my first DE shave today using a Merkur Vision 2000 this thing is big and heavy compared to my Mach 3 Power which Im looking to ditch. I got a few niks having my head (I shave bald) but Im sure with? practice I will no longer cut myself. I noticed that Im unable to shape up my beard due to the Bulky razor so I had to revert back to my Mach 3 for the shape up of my beard. Do you have any tips for shaping up a beard using DE razor? Or should I consider a straight razor for shaping?

Hi Mantic, great vids. I have a question though. I have just ordered some nice Taylor's soap online and I see on your vid that you have the whole soap in the bottom of your cup - is that right? What @Mantic59 said. I started with the 3 blade Gillette green shaving device thing with replaceable cartridges. After suffering the electric shaver and then going back to the 3 blade and getting razor burn constantly, I finally went down to a 1 blade BIC. Much better. The 4 or 5 blade razor should have had a "rips? your face off guarantee" on it. Most painful shave in the world. When your whiskers start getting thicker, I'd recommend the safety razor. It busts beards without a problem.

Hi!? Mantic! try r41 with astras. I had this same problem - cuts all over, I wos so pist off that I bought it, but I covered that it wos feaathers' fault. Now with astras it's my everyday shaver, midium agresive(I must shave everyday becose of my work and have a heavy beard). Gives moust clouse shave that we all searching in barbers shop with no irritation or cuts. My former were merkur slant (too mild) and straigth wapienica. Now I can say that r41 is best!!!!

I like the r41, but I actually use it in tandem with a Merkur HD. I take two passes with the r41, one with the grain and one across. Then I go ATG with the HD and I have a perfect shave. I've always had irritation on my ATG pass when using only the HD. I've been developing my? technique for a long time and feel that I can finally achieve a far superior shave than I would with a mach 3, by using the R41, and a Safety Bar like an HD or DE89. I might go for the Ikon SK9 on my next purchase.

Believe me, you'll thank yourself for getting a Merkur or some other quality razor right away. Cheap razors are pretty much a waste of time and money. Besides, some Merkurs can? be had for 30 bucks or less and will last a lifetime. If you get an adjustable, it'll probably be the last razor you'll ever need. Anyway, if you wanna be stubborn, I'd go with a Parker. It's a somewhat trusted brand.

My favorite silvertip brush is from china and cost me $30. Apparently the company is shunned for some reason so I won't use their name (I've heard multiple reasons for why from child labor to flooding message boards with spam, etc.)but its quality is on par with a $300 brush I own from another more well known company. So don't be? fooled by price if quality is your main concern. Research whatever you buy before you do and if something is frowned upon on certain websites, learn why.

Sir, I hear a lot of good may come from storing your razor and or blades in the freezer between? uses. This can greatly slow the oxidation process. I haven't really tried this much. I use a schick injector and store it in a glass of mineral oil between uses in Bathroom cupboard. This seems to extend the life of the blade. I have also heard something as simple as don't store your razor in the Humid bathroom at all can help a lot.

I'm currently using a razorpit knock off for a strop. I do think that my shave cream ( proraso ) has a type of coconut oil in that "sticks" to blade a bit.? Hmmm...

While I don't mind quickly washing off the oil prior to shaving It? seems to me that the mineral oil being a petrol product mildly deteriorates the rubber parts of the shave cartridge but it's hard to prove. Rubbing alcohol seems to do the same thing. I'm wondering if Mark's idea of olive oil is a better idea. Currently i'm testing a product called "Clippercide" a 4 in 1 aerosol spray w/ a cleaner, disinfectant & lube oil.

You did an full interview while drunk in the experience of a top of the? line shaving experience, with a guy who has a straight razor against your throat. You sir, are a BOSS. I tried shaving in college and gave up, because I had no idea what the hell I was doing. The resulting razor bumps, rashes and the like made me throw my hands up in the air. i wouldnt say his? that skilled barber. he was going pretty rough on your skin, i can tell that much by just looking at the tension of the skin as well as how hard his pressing the blade against your skin as well. he also doesnt know how to massage the face properly. the same motion over n over. that actually can ruin the elasticity of your skin. I have a question, and I'm probably going to sound really stupid asking... I am using a Tweezerman badger brush and this kit. I soaked my brush and let the water drain off I DID NOT? SHAKE, I loaded my brush and began to make lather. I got a wonderful lather going so I applied a small amount to my arm to see how long it took to dry. After 5 minutes the lather was still moist so I applied to my face( it was a cool whip texture) the only problem is I only had enough for one pass. Hey Mantic, Just wondering how much lather you end up with in the breach after face lathering like this? I'm basically doing the same thing, with probably even thicker lather, but it only lasts 2 passes or so, and I need a small recharge for a third.? I've got a dense silvertip brush. The breach isn't dry, but its not bursting with lather either. That said, if I squeeze the brush at the end, I get quite a nice amount of thick, emollient lather. Love the vids! Thanks.

Most users of DE blades don't track which side is used, and then switch sides when it is blunt. Most people shave until one side of the razor is full of lather, and flip the razor over to the other side, or they shave, rinse, and then? flip the razor. Either way both edges get an equal amount of use. Also flipping the blade in the razor accomplishes nothing as each side only has one cutting edge.

That? you'll have to learn on your own. It's a personal choice, some blades might work for you really good, while others will be shitty. Try Nacet blades for starters. They are sharp and will leave your face feeling raw and tacky...but the smoothness is worth it. They're cheap too, only $1.25 at most ethnic food stores.

At first I did not like this soap, because it was not loading on? my brush properly. Wetting the soap prior to loading the brush seems to help soften up the soap surface. I have used this with simpsons chubby 2 in best badger, and simpsons wee scott. Both brushes work good. Simpsons chubby gives more than ample cream. Wee scott is just shy for 3 passes with me. I have tried tabac and trumpers coconut, and this is my favorite.

i just shaved with mitchell's original wool and it was amazing. I put it in warm water first and it easily went on to my brush as soon as i started stirring. I got a lot of lather quick. Best shave ever. I? used to use shaving cream. I don't think I'm ever going back now. I use a normal, regular bar of soap, face scrub from time to time and it works great. But my skin is rather oily, I must add. What does not work for me is soap like 'Dove', where they claim that it 'creams' or remoistens the skin. I wash my face really thouroughly before the shave and I use? a hot towel for several minutes, maybe that's why I never had any problems. After shaving I rinse really well with cold water. I never witnessed any problems with this routine.

mantic, I've got this great oil that works wonders on the neck, but its something of a chemical quandary, and something that I have not been able to figure out even as a student of organic chemistry (just yet anyway). Its the #31-0 preshave oil from Kiehls. It loaded with essential aromatic oils of? rosemary and eucalyptus and others, yet its completely water soluble! You can shave right over it then rinse it completely clean! Organic oils are big and non polar, how can they dissolve?

I have big problems with my neck area. But the wierd thing is the problems completely disappear if I use a Mach3 cartridge razor and not a DE, I have tried several? different DE blades, different razors (including the slant bar) and tons of different lathering products and techniques. But I always get extremely irritaded and can never get a close shave. But if I use a Mach3 its no problem at all, I can even shave against the grain without a trace of irritation. Could my skin be allergic to DE? :(

As far as the tools transitioning to women's needs, my barber actually suggested I practice straight-razor shaving on my girlfriend's legs (WITH her permission, of course) when I was considering using one for daily shaving. While I ended up with a DE razor, I think the principle is still the same? - leg shaving may be easier than face shaving. Manscaping and female-scaping would be much the same.

Keep up the great work! I always look forward? to new videos, since I am only a week into traditional shaving. I've only tried Red Pack Israeli Personnas so far, with multiple razors ('48-49 Super Speed, '64 Super Speed, and Merkur Vision) and I have to say, I do love the Vision. The only thing I hate is that the adjustment can easily be knocked in use (and I have to close it up all the way, being that my technique isn't great yet, so even a little bit is noticeable). Can't wait for the Derby's..

I second that. Derby's are very sharp for the price and if you like them, you can get 100-packs online for less than $20 american. I find Astra's only marginally more expensive but a bit more comfortable to shave with.? As always, your mileage may vary.

This is the razor I began my DE journey with...paired with a feather blade. For sensitive skin I recommend a milder blade, I use a Gillette 7 o'clock. With this blade, my Slant becomes easier to use than my Mergress...and? is twice as effective, with no irratation. I assume this is the best DE razor on the market. It would be fun to buy a whole bunch of DE razors, but I'm poor and I figure if rich and middle class people have already done that and some of them have posted comments? with 5 stars on west coast shaving, 10 5 star ratings, then I might as well save my money and just buy the one they say is the best. The other one with such strong reviews I saw was the Edwin Jagger, but that was rated highly for it's beautiful chrome finish, not for it's shave.

Initially I ordered the 37c short version Slant Bar razor and it was fantasic. One pass is all you'll need with it. But being use to a longer handle, I then? bought the 39c model. Although it's very solid, I found the handle too heavy and for maneuverability with such an aggressive razor, you might want total control. I'll go with the 37 version !

Agreed about anyone using a slant. They're more "aggressive" on your whiskers, not your skin. The amount of blade exposure is about the same compared to a standard straight bar. I need much less touch-up work with my slant compared to my straight bar (11C) because of how much better it cuts. Also, the slant lets me go ATG on my neck because it? cuts rather than lifts & tugs on my sharply-angled neck hair.

I would recommend a slant to anyone, as long as you use no pressure and don't treat it like a Fusion you should be fine, but I suppose there are always people who it won't agree with. I am not extremely experienced with DE shaving, but? went for the slant as I feel my technique is good. You are definately right about it being quick to bite you, I had no nicks or cuts at all on my first shave with this today but on my neck I came close it is a lot more viscious lol

Well I got my 39c today and it's amazing, closest and smoothest shave of my life. I do have very sensitive skin and thick growth, if anything I'd say although it's aggressive because of the angle of the blade, it IS suitable for sensitive skin as I had to use no pressure at all. Usually a standard DE setup would be scratchy in certain areas of my? neck causing irritation, I got a lot less irritation (actually zero) with the 39c it cuts through anything with ease- can hardly even feel it

I had this same thing with a DE. Fairly sensitive skin and against the grain gave me blood and with gave me a porcupine feel. I experimented with different kinds of cream and it helped a lot. ? Always use a hot cloth or shave fresh out of the shower. Consider using a shaving oil, this way your skin is slippery as hell and it will bleed far less, at least in my case. The one thing that guarantees me a close shave is an open razor, but that takes a lot longer than a DE.

I do three passes, 1) Down. 2) Up 3) From ear to middle of face Then I feel around my face and find rough spots, lather the rough spots one more time and go lightly over the rough spots against the grain. It's been working pretty good. The key is always to keep "reduction" in? mind. You're goal is never to get a baby smooth shave, but you WILL get a baby smooth shave if you just keep reduction in mind.

I'm afraid a lot of it is learning what your? skin can--and cannot--handle. You might consider experimenting on which angles that may be *almost* across the grain would give you hair reduction without the twists and turns: that's the beauty of a DE razor--while you may have to understand the hair's grain, you don't have to be a slave to it. Try shaving straight down, twice (relathering before the 2nd time), regardless of grain.

Mantic, I have extremely sensitive skin and fairly coarse hair. I shave to take care of just the small stubble. But even so, I find that when I go with the grain (DE safety razor), it takes me around 8 passes before I give up and switch to my Gillette Fusion. If I go against the grain lightly, even once, my face is a bloody mess. Going across the grain is hard due to varying hair growth directions.? So with a DE, even after reducing with an electric, I can't get rid of simple stubble. Advice?

I have 3 synthetic brushes and they do behave differently. Actually the one? I like best is a cheap (~$15) Omega Synthex!

Lookin good indeed, glad to see you posting fresh videos :) I was wondering - I own a synthetic brush by L'Occitane and I'm afraid it's not the smoothest of shaves. With my skin being a bit on the sensitive side when I haven't had enough sleep, I find that I'm definitely in need of a new brush, even though the L'Occitane does perfect with longer beard. What I'd really like to know is whether all synthethics generally share the same qualities as? the one I own, or should I just try another make?
